Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times Would anyone like this movie? Juvenile space nuts, maybe. But they'd be too sophisticated. Rated: 1.5/4 Jan 1, 2000 Full Review Dan Webster Spokesman-Review (Washington) Despite being derivative of every film from E.T. to Short Circuit, this effort stands out because of director Harry Winer's ability behind the camera and, in general, the acting. Rated: 3/4 Jul 27, 2024 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews ...an affable yet perpetually erratic endeavor... Rated: 3/4 Apr 21, 2024 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy "This Summer's Greatest Adventure," blared the ads for SpaceCamp -- a blatant case of false advertising, considering such popular hits as Aliens and Top Gun were also released during that particular hot-weather stretch. Rated: 2/4 Oct 3, 2021 Full Review Mattie Lucas From the Front Row A spirited adventure featuring a delightful score by John Williams and a great group of kids that includes Leah Thompson, Tate Donovan, and Joaquin Phoenix in his film debut. Rated: 3/4 Jun 4, 2019 Full Review Betsy Bozdech DVDJournal.com Like The Goonies, Space Camp is one of those cheesy '80s classics you can't genuinely enjoy unless you were about ten the first time you saw it. Luke S There is nothing to hate about this movie. It needs a modern update, but... who cares? I thought it was fun. Not brilliant... but.... not bad. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/08/24 Full Review Steve D If you can get past the ridiculous set up you will have a lot of fun. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/06/23 Full Review Audience Member I loved this movie. Now as a 41 year old i still love it. It was a great adventure. I loved Kelly Preston, Lea Thompson & Kate Capsure after this film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie was a childhood staple for me. I was in 3rd grade when The Challenger exploded. I watched it live with all of my classmates and we all burst into tears with our teacher. When I first rented this movie from the video store back in the Beta and VHS choice days, this movie gave me comfort about space travel after witnessing such a traumatic event at a young age. Seems strange, I know, but it did. I rented it pretty religiously for years and I desperately wanted to go to Space Camp and later become an astronaut. I am now teacher with 3 kids and found it on YouTube tonight and showed it to my son. It's still an awesome movie. Sometimes all movies have to do is tell a good story and connect to our hearts. Thanks Space Camp! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member This is the kind of teenage adventure yarn that could only be spun within the context of Eighties cinema. We as a species have become far too cynical and close-minded to believe in such an innocent excursion into out-of-this-world entertainment. If we don't have jaded, grizzled astronauts risking life and limb to save their team members from imminent danger, we simply don't find the story believable. When lovable robot Jinx sets up an actual launch for the youngsters attending training at the titular facility at the inadvertent behest of Max, whom Jinx has developed an affection for, the unprepared students find themselves at the cold mercy of outer space. Let's face it, folks . . . that's not the easiest codswallop to swallow. There are other reasons why this film is not a fondly remembered classic from its decade besides its preposterous premise. The biggest problem this film faces is the fact that all five of its teenaged stars and both of its lead adult players have delivered much better performances in their careers than they did on this occasion. Here they seem bland and unaffected and one has to wonder if this is due to a deficiency in its screenplay or - more likely - the relative theatrical inexperience of its director Harry Winer. Winer spent much of his first decade in the business directing television and those small screen sensibilities are ever present in this movie. A lot of the moments which were supposed to be dramatic merely left me wondering when they were going to end with their ridiculous pacing and shabby execution. Sequences set in space should have bowled the audience over, but by 1986 the bar had been raised a lot higher than "SpaceCamp" appeared willing to go. I think cardboard cutouts would have made better backgrounds for these sequences. At least then it would be all right to find the effects laughable. I genuinely wanted to like this film. I really thought there was the seed of a good story waiting to blossom into a cheesy Eighties blockbuster . . . but that just doesn't happen. It would have been interesting to see what a more capable director could have accomplished with the idea - someone along the lines of a Robert Zemeckis or a Steven Spielberg. As it stands, "SpaceCamp" is eminently forgettable tripe best left unwatched. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member Perfect. This a great movie that I used to watch a lot as a child. Fun for everyone. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Read all reviews
