Tasha Robinson The Verge For a mainstream supernatural-fantasy war film, Spectral is curiously devoted to rhapsodizing about science, and considering the moral implications of scientific discovery. Dec 15, 2016 Full Review Howard Gorman NME (New Musical Express) It's a cracking sci-fi military mystery that apes from various genres whilst yet never feels overly familiar. The ensemble cast works wonders and the special effects are in the same class as most big blockbuster flicks. Jun 10, 2021 Full Review Brian Costello Common Sense Media The battle scenes are frenzied with edge-of-your-seat excitement, and unlike so many other war-themed movies, no clear-cut direction pointing to just how this movie will end. Rated: 3/5 Oct 12, 2018 Full Review Jodi Smith Pajiba Instead of going for huge stars, awkward and unneeded backstories, and bloat, Spectral manages to pack in just what a viewer needs to enjoy the plot and journey placed before them. Oct 12, 2018 Full Review Germain Lussier io9.com "The less you know, the better." It's a common phrase used in all walks of life, and it applies perfectly to Nic Mathieu's Spectral. Mar 9, 2017 Full Review Scott Weinberg Nerdist Spectral probably won't win many awards for originality, but if you're down for a "ghosts vs. soldiers" action flick that doesn't take itself all that seriously [and] moves at a nice pace... then Spectral will probably fit the bill. Gregory S Pretty good movie with a pretty solid cast. It actually gets better with each watch. Underrated movie for sure. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/29/25 Full Review Super F If you really like visual effects its pretty good. The plot was pretty interesting, and the ingenuity of the characters was also cool. However the characters don't really evolve and there isn't any kind of message, not to mention the science behind the plot is pretty far fetched. The thing that really carried this movie for me was, as previously mentioned, the visual effects, the costume design, and how the characters react to problems in unexpected ways. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/27/25 Full Review Dan O It was ok until it got dumb. Kinda horrific premise that could have gone somewhere, but didn't. Overall waste of time. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/26/25 Full Review Darryl S Impossible to take seriously. A good cast and pretty good effects, but it just wandered off into the ludicrous. Building state of the art weapons from bits and pieces laying around? Too convenient, and even if they could fashion such a weapon the battery packs they had would never create this much power. 75% of the movie had a kind of storyline, but the last 25% made no sense, had massive plot holes and just seemed lazy. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 05/14/25 Full Review Audience Member Great acting. Good writing. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/11/25 Full Review Samrat M Critics giving high praise for this junk is exactly why we should not have critics deciding what we should watch or how we entertain ourselves.
