jesse o This is a weird movie in the sense that the first half of it is ridiculously boring, and I would know since I actually stopped it halfway through to go to sleep. That's obviously misleading, since I do that with more frequency now than ever before. I was tired, but at the same time I was kinda bored by the movie so I just wanted to leave it for later for one reason or another, don't ask me why, because I don't even know myself. Really, the first half of the film did absolutely nothing for me. I say this a lot, but it wasn't bad or anything of the sort, it was just a movie that I could take or leave at that point. And I was leaning towards leaving it. It was just that type of movie, like I could've been done with it at that point and it wouldn't have bothered me one bit. But once I picked it back up in the morning, it was like a completely different movie. I'm not saying the second half of the film fixed everything and therefore the film was, overall, good, cause it had some goofiness involved, but the second half is considerably more entertaining. And this is by comparison to its first half, not speaking generally. Because when compared in general, then this wouldn't even come close. But the second half moves quicker and offers some laughs. There's some character development in the film, in that the father is looked at as a bit of a coward due to fainting after come face to face with the thief, who's been coming into his house every day and stealing his stuff, and being unable to do something about it to protect his family. His wife seems distant and his kids don't respect him. So the second half of the film sees the lead character, Goh, do something about it. He starts to train in martial arts for self defense purpose, which leads to some of the funniest moments in the film, and he decides to set up traps around his house in order to dissuade the thief from attempting to rob from him and his family again. The problem with Goh finally getting the respect of his family is that it's resolved like way too easily. His kids are disrespectful to him at every turn. Goh resolves his relationship with his son by inviting him to help him out with the traps. He also resolves his relationship with his daughter by comforting her after the thief ripped this concert ticket for her favorite boy band in half. His wife also starts to pay more attention to him once they have great sex. It's ridiculously absurd that after all that time his family spent ridiculing or ignoring him that their issues could be resolved with something so simple. I just thought it was silly how Goh's relationship with each member of his family was resolved. I'm sure they didn't really wanna go that in-depth, but I'm sure they could've found a much better resolution to all of this, but they were just too lazy to do so. There's also this moment, during Goh's birthday, that the family just came across like something you'd see out of postcard. It's all perfect, they're all happy and smiling. It was kind of nauseating. So it's obvious the film isn't even good. The movie benefits from the fact that Park Sang-myun, who plays Goh, has a likable presence. He's not the best South Korean actor I've seen, but he's solid and has decent comic timing. But I feel that he probably didn't get the chance to be at his best in this film, there's just something about this movie that feels like it was meant to be more a of B-tier, or even C-tier, comedy. It's got that look and feel. And the film ended up being a bomb in South Korea anyway, so I guess that tells you all you need to know. Really, though, the movie isn't bad. It's just somewhat average, at best. It's got a lot of flaws and it doesn't really make much of an effort to hide them. So, really, watch this at your own risk. I didn't mind it, since the second half is such an improvement over the first half, but it's not like I gained much from watching this. I could've spent my time doing something more productive, even if I thought this was just average. Can't really recommend it, however. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
