Richard Brody The New Yorker Herzog's vision of his disillusionment and despair rises to a hectic pitch of absurdist tragedy. May 18, 2020 Full Review Gary Arnold Washington Post In some perverse way Herzog would probably prefer to see his despised and rejected characters remain despised and rejected, because it's their abject misery alone that seems to affirm their humanity in his eyes. Dave S In Stroszek, three disparate characters (an alcoholic ex-con, a prostitute, and an eccentric landlord), after forming an unlikely bond, decide to flee their German homeland in search of a better life in rural Wisconsin. A master of films dealing with alienation and the need for characters to find someplace to lay roots, Stroszek is a film that could only have been made by Werner Herzog and the proof is in his extensive repertoire – Aguirre, Fitzcarraldo, Grizzly Man, etc. It’s a simple movie on the surface, but effectively strips the three main characters to their core, exposing their suffering and need for some form of acceptance. The performances are all strong, but where it really excels is with Herzog’s insightful script, topped with a line from Stroszek himself when he asks the simple question “who knows what fate has in store for you?” How true. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/22/25 Full Review Blobbo X It's one of a kind at the very least. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/12/23 Full Review isla s This is a bleak and sobering watch - its quite thoughtful. At the end it turns somewhat surreal and I suppose it has an arty element to it. Its quite hard to describe in any detail but I certainly wouldn't recommend it if your looking for something to cheer yourself up because this is quite, as I say, a sobering and even grim watch. I think the central performance by Bruno S. was quite good. He plays a quite detached individual well. There is some poignant dialogue and if the director is one you enjoy (Warner Herzog) then I'd recommend it. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review georgan g So many aspects of this film were engaging. Reality v daydream fantasy, relationship that are good AND bad, acting v the non-actors playing themselves and comedic v tragedy. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Not one of the better Herzog movies, to say the least. Pretty annoying and silly. Not sure what the hell he was trying to get at here, besides nihilism or something about how it sucks to be poor and stupid. It's a movie for hipsters to convince themselves it's great and anyone who can't see that has no true grasp of cinema. Yeah, that wacky ending is something, but sure as hell not enough to save this drowning witch. That ship arrived too late and at the wrong dock. 2.8 stars Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review peter w If Stroszek had been filmed twenty years earlier it would have been a fine example of absurdist film-making. Instead, we have a documentary from the 70s where the actions of the characters are unpredictable yet make perfect sense in the context of their lives, right up to the final lines of film where a police officer radios "We've got a truck on fire, can't find the switch to turn the ski lift off, and can't stop the dancing chicken." What keeps the absurdity sustained is the culture clash of German characters being unprepared for the American hyper-capitalism and individuality that props up the branding of streets being paved with gold. Hence the expectation that the film will have an unresolved and somewhat bizarre ending. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
