Larry Cohen’s film is a barbed satire of 1980s consumer culture. Go to Full Review

Gory sequences do finally arise at the climax – a nonsensical showdown of sorts – but it doesn’t offset the unnecessary humor and the pervasive lack of sincerity. Go to Full Review

The Stuff may struggle just a little to get its narrative moving along over the course of its brief 80-ish minutes, but there's still a fair amount to like about it, including its amusing & clever special effects and its on the nose satire. Go to Full Review

…The Stuff didn’t find favour at the time, satire rarely does, but it’s a funny, sharp and satirical movie that his its targets squarely, and there’s some ingenious model work for the action scenes… Go to Full Review

Vincent S. @Vin_E_At_The_Movies Dec 1 Like the Blob, this is cheesy fun with wonderful over the top performances and a determined focus and energy from Larry Cohen that stuffs out big budget horror movies like The Conjuring: Last Rites. See more Michael D Nov 29 Marshmallow Fluff meets The Blob. That is all. See more Ryan P Nov 16 The Stuff is a horror/Sci-fi movie that was first screened in 1985 and was directed by Larry Cohen. It’s essentially about a beverage in an everyday household that becomes sentient and tries to take over humanity. It’s sort of like Invasion of The Body Snatchers, except they’re more zombie-like than intelligent. The movie aims at a theme to create horror on both consumerism and commercialism, which isn’t a bad pitch for a horror movie. To exemplify the theme of horror, they would often use common products we would eat to act as props for The Stuff in the movie, such as yogurt, whip cream, ice cream, etc. As interesting as The Stuff sounded as a pitch or on advertisement, it unfortunately misfires as a horror movie upon its first screening. In the first half of the movie, you aren’t really introduced to many of the horror scenes that traditionally set up a horror film. Of course, they show scenes of The Stuff bubbling and what not, but they never show a scene that gives us a good reason to be absolutely terrified of the stuff. If they had shown at least one scene of body horror towards the beginning, such as when Charlie Hobbs/Chocolate Chip was turned into some sort of monster by The Stuff toward the end, then it certainly would’ve had me on edge. The plot of the film is also filled with holes and lack of attention to certain continuity errors. For example, the quarry in which the Stuff was discovered had snow present while for the rest of the film, the quarry didn’t. Certain characters' acting were great while some lacked depth to make them interesting. Like the kid for example, he didn’t mourn over losing his family to the Stuff and just sort of went along with everything. Other characters in the film like Mo were great and as if he didn’t belong in the film or rather a horror setting in particular. The gap between actors is noticeable, whether it’s because of the plot or the acting is up for debate. Would I recommend The Stuff to anyone in particular today? Not to the modern audience at least, but I heavily believe that The Stuff is more suitable for people who love films from the 90s. Anyone outside of that group I recommend may find it tiring to watch as I have. The lack of continuity and details in the background can be brushed aside. Plus, I don't think it’s that bad of a film. The general problem with it is the lack of execution to make the film horrifying. So right now, it feels more of an adventure type of film rather than a horror film, which is what I meant when I said it misfired at the beginning. Overall, it matters down to personal preference to decide on watching this film. See more Paul B Oct 31 I adore this film . Some of the Special effects were a bit ropey even for it's time but the commercials and the presentation of the zombie dessert were so flashy that if you saw just the " where's the Stuff " advertisment you would assume that it's a real product. Mo Rutherford has a weird character arc but he's goofy and I love him. See more Jason H Aug 22 Paul Sorvino is the best part of this movie. See more Jonathan N Aug 15 It was funny, original, and let's face it, pretty silly. This "horror" movie feels like it was made for children. Yet, as a B movie, it holds its own and I would watch it again. Worth the watch. See more Read all reviews
