I was 13 when this movie came out. I saw it in the theater and loved it right away. I watched a lot of MTV growing up, so the faster paced editing was appealing. The movie feels like one long music video. The soundtrack is killer as well! I love how imaginative, creative, and a little left of center the movie is. It's a must see with an open mind.

Tank Girl is definitely a cool movie, but it just wasn’t for me. It did a lot of interesting things in adapting a comic, especially with nailing the fun, steampunk-inspired costume design. Tank Girl’s hair and makeup stood out with it being its own vibe and not meant to look like anything the audience has seen before. That said, the dialogue felt very “cool female protagonist” from the 90s and 2000s, with lots of “Oh yeah? Watch this!” moments. Lori Petty's mannerisms, expressions, and voice brought so much life to the character, but the lines didn’t always land for me. Watching this in 2024, after movies like Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, probably didn’t help, since that movie is one of my favorites so my expectations were raised for non-superhero comic adaptations. Then there’s the kangaroo people. I know they’re part of the comic’s world, but I just couldn’t get into them. Something about those animal-human prosthetics, like in the 90s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, feels distracting. Maybe it’s a generational thing, because I didn;t grow up watching many films or movies with those kinds of prosthetics but it didn’t click for me. Even though I didn’t totally vibe with it, I’d still recommend watching Tank Girl!

This movie was alright. It was pretty entertaining and interesting though. While the movie could have had potential with its unique story and punk aesthetic, I found myself surprisingly bored throughout the movie even though there was a lot of action. I really liked the idea of this dystopian future where water is the most valuable resource because that is possible if for whatever reason we loos all of our drinkable water. The main character Tank girl does live up to her name as she is someone who is rebellious and quirky who drives a tank. I found her really annoying throughout the movie as I felt she was trying too hard to be humorous and edgy. What was pretty strange were the mutant kangaroo characters the Rippers they made me feel uncomfortable idk if it was the costuming the effects or the concept itself. I feel like their role in the movie was rushed and their lack of development made it hard to care about their role in the story. There use of comic panels was really cool its something that I don't see too often. It seemed like the filmmakers had ambitious ideas but lacked the budget to execute it properly. I really enjoyed the soundtrack though it was good and it fit the movie perfectly. One of the major flaw in this movie I think was the passing because some of the scene were dragged on far too long. I wouldn’t recommend the movie unless your seeking something quirky.

Tank Girl is a great movie, but I did not enjoy it. It did a lot of things that were innovative for adapting a comic and kept the pop of action that seems only a comic can create. The costume design was fun and it was really cool to see the steampunk aesthetic really embraced in Tank Girl’s wardrobe. I also really appreciated her hair and makeup and how despite how strong beauty standards were in the 90s the movie did not fall victim to sacrificing the unique look that Tank Girl has. Although I can appreciate all of that, my own dislike with the movie has to do with the dialogue as it follows the same cool female protagonist of other 90s and 2000s movies. It feels very, “Oh yeah? Watch this!” Though Lori Petty does her best to make this work, and if anybody is going to make those lines watchable, it’s her. I love her take on the character and the little mannerisms that she includes. Her facial expressions, specifically her wide eyes and her voice really define Tank Girl’s persona. I suppose this is a bit of a biased review as I’m writing this in 2024 and I love the movie Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, and it has set a certain expectation of non-superhero comic book adaptations. Another thing that I personally just couldn’t enjoy were the kangaroo people. This is not particularly something the movie did wrong; it’s just something that, as a viewer, I’m thinking, “Why did they add this?” I feel that way for other animal-human prosthetics like the the 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Perhaps as a younger viewer who didn’t grow up with these type of prosthetics, it’s more jarring, but regardless, it’s something that I didn’t enjoy. Overall, I would still recommend giving this movie a watch because they made so many unique creative choices and I admire their commitment to the vision they had.

this week's piece of cinema was Tank Girl, rated R and released in 1995 It was the baby of director Rachel Talalay, categorized as an action, comedy, and sci-fi film starring Lori Petty, Malcolm McDowell, and Ice-T. from what I’ve the movie was based on a London comic book in 1988. So it makes sense that this movie has sort of a punk vibe, too I mean, just look at what they are wearing the whole movie. I wasn’t sure how I felt about this movie, but it was a fun ride it had like an offbeat tone and a unique style, and to be honest, the movie gave me Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World vibe to it. Tank Girl definitely gives me Harley Quinn vibes, this being a comic book movie, it is interesting to see how comic book movies back then didn’t take themselves too seriously, unlike the comic book/superhero movies we get today that have much grounded and darker tones. The plot was, eh, involving an evil corporation that wants all the water left in the world but gets completely destroyed by kangaroo hybrids. It is a bit silly; however, getting to see Ice-T dressed up as a Kangaroo might have made up for it. I recommend this movie to anyone who wants to get high as hell and just turn off their brain. Considering the technology they had at the time, the movies don’t really hold up, but honestly, if they were to make this movie today and modernize it in the right hands, I think it could work. It is not my cup of tea, but it is not horrible 2.5/5

I don't know why but when watching this film for the first time it felt like I was watching the first live action 2002 Scooby-Doo movie, it was enjoyable and I see how they tried to capture the essence of the comics but it was made in 1995 soo not a lot was working for a comic book movie adaptation. Seeing Lori Petty trying her best to be the Tank Girl they wanted makes it all worth watch, she tries to capture her and how she would act in certain scenarios. I believe if this film was revived and made a new it might be good if put into the right hands. If they wanted to save money and time they sure did that with animated segments of the film to emphasize how it happens without all the actual stunts to practice as well as using props for the crazy action. With the technology we have today, this film made new can work and would love to see how it goes. The plot for me wasn't that great, involving a evil corporation who wants all the water left in the world but get completely destroyed by kangaroo hybrids is a bit silly. As well as the b plot of saving a young girl isn't all that to think about, but if just watching it without a critique, it is fun and entertaining to watch if you just want to sit and not think of anything else to do. I did enjoy the fun and bizarre parts of the film and it kept me in to watch till the end.
