I'd never heard of this until I spotted it on a library shelf: with this cast I had to take a look. The first time through, I didn't care for it. Rex Harrison reprises his "My Fair Lady" act. Shirley MacLaine reprises a 'prostitute with a heart of gold' schtick. But I watched it again and noticed the sets, the costumes, gorgeous European scenery, the slightly-wrong score that does ultimately work and more. And Art Carney is pretty darn good. An Ingrid Bergman/Omar Sharif love story (talk about beautiful people) feels a lot like the last half hour of "The Sound of Music" but in a good way. Two love scenes are oddly spied upon and...it's just all strange, sort of hypnotic. I shall watch it again, it's actually a beautiful movie. French actress Jeanne Moreau is great, as is Alain Delon (French also doing an Italian accent?, but that's okay, he's there to be handsome and look good in Speedo-type swimwear. Worth watching for the cast. But about MacLaine's swimsuit, why oh why? It's 60's appliance green and very ugly. Like I said, this one is strange.

Sumptuous, smooth and stuffed with A-list movie stars, this is nonetheless almost entirely uninteresting. Three forty-minute chapters whose only connection is the eponymous vehicle, filmed in glorious Italian and Slovenian locations - and several very obvious soundstages - it purrs along, never getting out of 2nd gear, and never allowing drama to interfere with the bland comfort blanket of Rattigan's screenplay. Edmund Purdom is awful in the first chapter.

Three stories about three love affairs in three countries (England, Italy and Yugoslavia) in this infamous "Royce Rolls". All the stories have promise, but only the first was good. I had to see it because of the cast. I wanted the last to be good, but Bergman was poorly directed and the story was silly at times.

Synopsis

One Rolls-Royce belongs to three vastly different owners, starting with Lord Charles (Rex Harrison), who buys the car for his wife (Jeanne Moreau) as an anniversary present. Another owner is Paolo Maltese (George C. Scott), a mafioso who purchases the car during a trip to Italy and leaves it with his girlfriend (Shirley MacLaine) while he returns to Chicago. Later, the car is owned by American widow Gerda (Ingrid Bergman), who joins the Yugoslavian resistance against the invading Nazis.
