Neil Soans The Times of India The Crew lands somewhat short of hitting the emotional mark as some of the beats are lost in translation (read 'dubbing'), yet top-notch effects and an uncompromising second half puts it on par with some of the best action-adventure flicks. corkball I don't know what to say here. In many ways, this film is a throwback to 70s disaster movies with random catwalks collapsing, everything burning continuously, and just insane rescues that defy logic. Maybe not as bad as '2012', but certainly getting up there. Part of this film reminds me of propaganda films from the Cold War where heroic, humble average Russians sacrifice for the greater good (although thank the Lord it is not couched politically), and the dubbing is dreadful. All that said, there are some legitimately exciting scenes in this film. And so while it is bad on many levels, it isn't a total wash up. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Mark S This is how American movies use to be made. Not the American/ Chinese crap there putting out now Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/04/21 Full Review Audience Member A Russian disaster movie that is a thowback to Irwin Allen, in a good way. There is some snarky subtext about the corruption, arrogance and authoritarianism of Russian society. It's actually cheery and refreshing to see you can thumb your nose at the regime, as long as it's not too heavy-handed. Hero after hero (there are a lot of heroic characters in this movie) has to make big life choices, usually between physical survival and having your life ruined for disobeying authority. The plot is a cross between Volcano and Airport 77. The crew of an empty jetliner diverts to rescue people stranded on a volcanic island who are, of course, being menaced by a volcanic volcano. Of course, once you land a big plane near a volcano, lava is immediately going to ruin the runway. Hijinx ensue. This is merely a disaster movie, but a well-executed one, with all the disaster-movie subplots you demand. I don't think you'll regret the time spent. Fun movie for family too, except for kids under 10 perhaps. Some people have reported being offput by the voice dubbing; I saw it with subtitles, and so should you. The Russian dialogue and Anglicization of names is a hoot. And you might even get one of your kids to start saying Spasibo because it's cool to say thank you in Russian. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member Inspiring story of heroism and ingenuity to overcome a cascade of catastrophes. Fantastic special effects that look real. Impossible to imagine this movie being made in the U.S. of 2018. Russia has attitudes of male heroism that are no longer publicly acceptable in the U.S. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member There comes a time for everyone to prove their worth. The Russian disaster film, partially inspired by the 1980 film of the same name. One of the film to do good business outside the domestic market, particularly in Japan and China. So there are lots of great stuff about it, from filmmaking to the box office and I enjoyed watching it, but did not like it as overwhelmingly. That does not mean it is overrated, but I liked it less, that's all. It is set to tell the story of life of pilots, their personal life, such as trouble with romance, family issues and tackling obstacles in their professional line, especially when they were needed the most. So in the first half it was all about drama, an introduction to what comes in the latter half. A pilot father struggling with his troublesome teen son. And another pilot who got fired from the Russian air force, now in a private airline where he meets a woman, but having a difficulty to stabilise the relationship. When the second half begins, the narration completely flips. Like it is a different film, particularly brings attention to the action- adventure fans. Fate brings them all together in a plane and they decide to evacuate people who are stranded in an airport near the Alaskan region island when it was hit by volcanoes and a series of earth quicks. The remaining is to reveal the heroic acts by the pilots and Co. "He's a pilot gifted by God. My hands are only hands, his hands are wings. I have never seen anyone like this before." Visually, it was good. All those crucial parts of the graphics were rendered neatly. Even the stunt sequences were composed so well. But some of them were unrealistic. That's very common, even for a Hollywood film, so I think it's not a big deal. My issue was the film length. It was over two hours long and I did not like much of the first part. The next half was quite good, because of its thriller. When I thought it's over, the narration surprised with another adventure followed by in the final segment. Like usual this Russian film too has been built on the corruption plot. Not the whole film, but in the initial stage. The influenced people who target the honest employees for going against them. Really a good theme, but when the disaster part takes over, everything will be forgotten. Then it gets edgy, so that's where you will forget the time and sit straight to enjoy it. If you had seen plenty of similar heroic films, then it will be another okayish type. If not, you will have a good time with it. It took an hour to get into action-adventure, but in those times, it failed to build the romance part to its best. I'm disappointed with that since it had fine actors and situation to build on. The Father- son duo looked much better. In the second half, nothing of these sentimentally appealed as it should have been, not for me. Because it became more a heroic type with sacrifice than family and relationship influence. So overall it's a good attempt, a nice film for the weekend watch. 7/10 Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews
