Eugene Archer New York Times Mr. Buuel and his co-scenarist, none other than Salvador Dali, have packed just about every-surrealist symbol they could think of into this rebellious epic. Rated: 5/5 May 8, 2004 Full Review Jamie Russell BBC.com Nonsensical, erotic, scandalous, revolutionary: Luis Buuel's surrealist masterpiece L'ge D'Or is not for those of a nervous disposition. Rated: 5/5 May 8, 2004 Full Review J. Hoberman Village Voice Suggests instances of sex and violence far more extreme than any actually represented while contriving effronteries so offhanded you can't believe you've actually seen them. Jan 27, 2004 Full Review Yasser Medina Cinefilia Everything looks absurd, dreamlike, eminently poetic and surreal, built with a very pleasant rhythm that is preserved for a magical hour. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/09/23 Full Review Ethan S I get that this film is hugely influential and certainly deserves a place among the important films of the 20th century, but particularly when it is compared to its predecessor, Un Chien Andalou, even its relatively short running time makes it seem bloated and portentous by comparison. Depictions that were once an inciteful critique of religion and bourgeois society now seem fairly rote, though this likely has more to do with my own (jaded?) sensibility than anything else. There are a couple of unexpectedly funny gags mixed in, mind you. It is worth a watch. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/03/21 Full Review William L Buñuel was pretty out there, but he was also a visionary. It just so happens that he also had a particular love for messing with animals in one way or another; the recipient of that honor in L'Âge d'Or was a small puppy who managed to get himself punted into the ocean. Bizarre but not completely unhinged, Buñuel and Dali seemed to get the most pleasure out of placing animals inareas where they shouldn't have been, apart from a few moments such as a brief toe-sucking scene which I can only imagine was included to cater to Tarantino decades down the line. A sincere but somewhat meandering criticism of the Catholic Church and the morality of then-modern society, L'Âge d'Or may move in fits and starts, but ends up a major piece of the emerging surrealist film movement; many of the problems accompanied with incorporating such a disconnected series of events would later be addressed by Buñuel in such films as The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie. The director's real genius was in considering the medium of film in a way that had never been done before - social criticism through surreal imagery and absurdity - and this film is a fine representative of that vision. (4/5) Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/31/21 Full Review Audience Member Surrealist excoriation of the bourgeoisie and the catholic church that provoked riots at French cinemas. Before watching this, I'd had no idea Salvador Dali had collaborated on films. It's almost too opaque to process in a single viewing, but I'm sure this has to do with how much trouble a film with these themes would have been to get past censors in the '30s. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member This is stylistically similar to Un Chien Andalou but greatly inferior - the extra length is just a consequence of flabbier editing. The use of sound is also very poor - it was clearly designed as a silent film and it would surely have been better if it had been left that way.
