Rachel Saltz New York Times It holds your interest, even if Jean-Marie remains what he must be to Mr. Cohen: an enticing puzzlement, his faith a mystery. Apr 10, 2014 Full Review Diana Clarke Village Voice The Jewish Cardinal uses the luscious pleasures of the everyday to underscore and endure the big questions of identity, humanity, and home. Apr 9, 2014 Full Review Eve Tushnet Patheos The way he finds to live and to die as a Catholic Jew may not satisfy any of the film's characters, but I'll say that I found it really touching. Lustiger proved that, and The Jewish Cardinal underscores it. Serge L This seems to be a TV movie. It explains his impacts in the 80s but it is not an epic journey. His life however was probably more epic. Lots of arguing but the film seems to lack poise. It is somewhat light like a comedy. Also, too much smoking by the church representants looks like sin nowaday. Although probably accurate, it does not convey the stress but rather a bad habit. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/18 Full Review Audience Member this film encompasses WW2, the holocaust, religious differences and family conflicts. As well as the 'politics' of the Vatican. Another great film for me, hopefully for you as well.this is true story about a Jew who becomes a Catholic and is so absorbed in the religion he moves on to priesthood and eventually becomes Cardinal of Paris. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member A smooth biopic about an enigmatic hybrid, a Jewish-born cardinal who becomes an adviser to pope John Paul the second. Though he has changed his name and his faith, he remains culturally identified with Jews. His father is heart-broken by his conversion, which seems to ignore the value of his mother's death in the holocaust. His attempts to remain true to his parents' memory are complicated by cold-war politics. The film shows the day to day life of priests, refreshingly free of clicheed romance (His cousin provides the only female presence outside of adoring parisioners). The hero does a good job of striding around energetically, shaking things up. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member One sided, laughably unauthentic portrayal of Polish side for someone who grew up there during those times. Painfully grotesque portrayal of John Paul II, untrue to his personality for those who knew him... Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member I've seen this movie and it was amazing. Glad I did !
