Audience Member I'll give credit when it's due and The Kumite does manage to put together some decent fight sequences despite the low budget but it's also clear that this was a very amateur outing. Technically speaking, The Kumite is lacking in many areas but one area that was very off putting was the audio. Normally you can forgive a bad english dub (which this has) but when the original audio is almost as bad and the foley work and ADR all fall short of what a film should have in this day and age and one has to wonder, did they know what they were doing? The editing is quite distracting and makes the fight sequences look sloppy. The acting is alright and manages to get the story across well enough... even if it is extremely dramatic and over the top at times. I felt like I was watching a Korean film more than a Chinese film so I wasn't surprised to find that this was made in both Hong Kong and South Korea. If you like the melodramatic styles of Korean films, you'll like enjoy this film more than most. For me, I just didn't buy into the love affair between student and teacher. But that is likely a cultural thing rather than the fault of the film. I can't really recommend Star Runner aka The Kumite aka Siu nin a Fu to anyone other than die hard martial arts fans who just gobble everything Muay Thai and Kung Fu up. If that doesn't sound like you... give this one a pass. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member The Kumite cut is longer. "It tries to take itself way too seriously, and its' starring actors are simply not up to the task of holding up the picture via their performances." For the "Star Runner" cut; A chick flick where the main character happens to be a MMA fighter. I saw it because it was nominated for Best Action Choreography at the Hong Kong Film Awards. There's an awful lot of waiting for the action to happen, when it finally happens, it's good. More Rocky than Shamo. The 2000's were tough on "Black Mask" director Lee. "Dragon Heat" "Three Kingdoms" and this, all 2 star affairs. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member the fighting is ok but the movie is crap.
