Critics Consensus

Although its high-energy plot and over-the-top violence may play better with genre aficionados, The Raid 2 definitely delivers more of everything audiences loved about its predecessor.

Jason Bailey Flavorwire The violence is so stylized, so energetic, and so magnificently choreographed that it abstracts into something beyond mere brawling; it's about the joy of performance and the thrill of capturing that performance. Jun 18, 2016 Full Review Grady Hendrix Film Comment Magazine Stylishly shot, edited with a lot of confidence in the audience's ability to follow parallel action, and ... faster and more brutal than anything else on the market. Apr 28, 2014 Full Review Geoffrey Macnab Independent (UK) It is adolescent male wish- fulfillment fantasy of the most retrograde kind but, as action cinema, the Jakarta-set thriller The Raid 2 is riveting fare. Apr 11, 2014 Full Review JD Duran InSession Film Forget the script and its over-complicated plot, the action is awesome. It alone, as you could imagine, is easily worth the price of admission... Me a "The Raid 2: Berandal" is brutal, bloody, and piled high with some of the most incredible action scenes ever filmed. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/21/25 Full Review John C The first Raid movie is a 5-star action masterpiece, for its low-budget feel and incredible fight choreography. The fight sequences felt a bit contrived but is forgivable overall due to the grittiness and grimness of the police's hopeless plight and the survive to dawn in a pressure-cooker plot that captures the viewer into believability. The sequel has a completely different feel and sideplots that were a bit confusing and inessential. There was little overall growth of the hero himself. The film's open-ended and yearslong plot to some nebulous goal feels a bit bloated, and the runtime reflects this. The comic-book style characters echoing the cool new villain with their own style at the next boss-level feels like it's catering to a gamer aesthetic. The wispy thin girl with indoor sunglasses fighting with framing hammers and the kid who can hit a baseball deadeye across a distance is to me a bit ludicrous and detracts from the legacy of the first film's more credible feel. The Matrix and John Wick has been done, and Evans failed to create or explore much new space or mythos here given what to an international audience not as familiar with this country might be an interesting exploration of Indonesian culture and politics. Other than that there are visually-interesting setpieces of action and bone-crunching violence. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/01/25 Full Review Yassi K Martial arts vom Feinsten Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/14/25 Full Review Sarfaraz A I'd seen the original when it was released. The original captivated me with its premise, which revolved on a building surrounded by special forces. However, in this sequel, directed by Gareth Evans and starring Iko Uwais, Iko is recruited to infiltrate the mafia clan and collect evidences on them, as well as the corrupt police chief. The film's fight sequences are extremely violent and long. Perhaps the Indonesian form of fight choreography (Pencak silat) is the only thing that will keep you watching this 2 hour 30 minute movie. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/05/25 Full Review Calvin O It is hard to believe but this movie is bigger better than the first one. This movie literally blew my mind. Please do yourself a favor and watch this movie. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/22/25 Full Review David L In my opinion, the greatest action movie ever made (so far). Gareth Evans should be getting huge paydays in Hollywood. Iko Uwais is amazing, as usual, as is the rest of the cast. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/04/25 Full Review Read all reviews
