Diego M The Roe's Room is an autobiographical film-opera by Lech Majewski, a Polish filmmaker who divides his activities between cinema, painting, theater and literature. The story takes place in a dreamy atmosphere that reflects the passage of time in the life of a family that lives in an old apartment building. With various references to Giorgio De Chirico's metaphysical painting, the film has no dialogue, the music being the one that expresses the feelings of the characters. A visual poem of extraordinary beauty that asks questions about the mystery of existence. "I didn't envision it at all," Majewski said in a telephone interview, "I just was working on the music. I didn't have the slightest idea I would develop it into a kind of video fresco." In using the word "fresco," the director gets right to the heart of nearly all his work - the incorporation of various art forms. The Roe's Room is a visually sumptuous exercise in storytelling, images depicting the surreal view of a young man's life. "I consider this work as kind of a broadening the language of visuals of film," Majewski said. Staying fulling with his operatic score he wrote with Józef Skrzek, Majewski did not just stage a filmed performance, but expanded the opera as an even more visual experience. "I think that film is used in a very narrow way. ... Whereas my perception of what I see around me in the world is like we get this multiplicity of images and trains of images that are going left, right and center," the 59-year old director said. Majewski layers his images, looking to engage viewers an experience to push beyond the 24 frames per second they are seeing. "It's more like, I'll call it poetry, a visual poetry." Yet there is still a story being revealed. The autobiographical tale of a young man's views of the life around him. But even with the autobiographical nature of the film, Majewski is happy to have viewers interpret the film however they may. "Basically everything I do is more or less autobiographical," Majewski said, adding that means The Roe's Room is just like all his other films. Through all his work, there is a meticulous attention to detail, and The Roe's Room is no exception, every camera move is revelatory, showing more depth into the mind of the man considering the state of his life and the life of his family. While understanding the lyrics of the opera can add to the experience of the film - the words are entirely in Polish - it is not necessary to be able to grasp the emotion, the longing, the search for meaning of the characters. I don't think that the subtitles or a point by point understanding o the narrative are necessary. The four seasons as cycle of life concept is a rather trite, but Majewski's gift for composition and increasingly surreal visuals make this an interesting experiment.
