Audience Member 'The Sadist' offers equivalent of slasher fare put together by a clever enough team of video artists to earn some kudos for bothering to make a film that's not dull, worthless standard fare. Consider this film to be something of an attempt at re-creation to the tune of retro B-film masterpiece that looks for the most part as if shot in the 1970s. You don't get an antagonist like that from innovation -- you've seen the type before. Imagine Michael Douglas in 'Falling Down' and then put him in a slasher film; you don't quite end up with what actual film of the era has already established, but I thought this would offer a fair contrast between 'then' and 'now' (2015 -- close enough). Put into words, there's not so much new here so much as some examples on how to make a better film. The characters seem decently likeable but not quite adorable. These impressions should help make the case: * timing of profanity. * male bonding * female intuition * substance abuse reflection (conventionally, these characters are not from anyone's social circle). Flaws: It seems that some footage was cut out that lets the characters get a little cozier than they should be at one point, off far enough that saying this much shouldn't spoil a thing. Another flaw: We never see what happens to the vehicle well enough to sense what kind of ape man our protagonists have to deal with. A slight detraction there, but noted. Finally, I simply don't get the sort of duck hunt that Uncle Wil has been thrilling over. What, he just scores them and ends up looking as rational as the villain? It's probably not a point about video game limitations taking over the human mind, but then you never know, do you? Like many a B-movie, you kind of get a sense that the budget reflects the sort of quality that was available moreso for a certain amount of the film. I think the coins start disappearing at around the 1/3rd point, but a few later scenes were also probably shot during that phase. Then maybe that cop has been playing video games his entire life, too. He seems to live some kind of egotistic joyride. I love the first 1/3rd of the film in plenty of ways for respectful regard for the audience. Cheers for that! Rating: 3.5 Stars, because, 'You can't make a better film than this for what it was.'
