Bilge Ebiri Spirituality & Health The Sweet Requiem is an admirable, sometimes surprising look at the tragedy of displacement, both the geographic and the psychological kind. Mar 20, 2020 Full Review Glenn Kenny New York Times The film puts its points across with a delicacy and sobriety rare in moviemaking. Jul 11, 2019 Full Review Justin Lowe The Hollywood Reporter Intensely personal and emphatically universal filmmaking. Sep 11, 2018 Full Review Dennis Harvey 48 Hills The Sweet Requiem combines harrowing adventure with the intrigue of present-day borders-crossing espionage and harassment. Nov 3, 2020 Full Review Alex Saveliev Film Threat The Sweet Requiem is also a call to action, a statement on the Chinese invasion of Tibet (whose desperate citizens resort to self-immolation), and by extension, a representation of all the lost souls exiled from their land. Rated: 8/10 Jul 22, 2019 Full Review Louis Proyect Counterpunch.org A cri de coueur from Tibetan filmmakers that speak on a behalf of a country resisting forced assimilation. Well-acted and directed, it relies on an intelligent use of flashbacks that shows how oppression can trigger the most desperate of flights. Jul 12, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member I saw this at the National Film Theatre, London yesterday. I thought it superb. It is a compelling and informative film, whether one knows anything about the plight of Tibet or not. I have seen many documentaries on the subject but none can hope to capture the realities of (for example) mothers having to say farewell to their children, the brutality of crossing the Himalayas on foot or the tangled, suspicious world of the Tibetan diaspora. I have to disagree with the person who has written that it is 'flat' - it has not fallen prey to the temptation to overdramatise or be contrived but the characters, the scenarios, the settings, ring emphatically true.
