Katie Walsh Los Angeles Times "The texture of falling" is a phrase that sounds cool but means nothing, and that's a good description of this film as well. Jul 31, 2018 Full Review Craig D. Lindsey Village Voice Allred's fractured storytelling seems intended to make the movie a sort of puzzle that comes together at the end (spoiler alert: it so doesn't). May 30, 2018 Full Review Grace Williams Battle Royale With Cheese The acting was so terrible, the plot so muddled and the reveal so underwhelming that as hard as I tried, I couldn't. May 29, 2019 Full Review Eric D. Snider EricDSnider.com It's 74 minutes of mediocre actors giving meek, low-energy performances while reciting clumsily written, faux-philosophical dialogue. Rated: D Jul 11, 2018 Full Review Sherilyn Connelly SF Weekly The Texture of Falling's ambition can't be understated, but the hyper-stylized execution leans too heavy on the sound and fury. Jun 14, 2018 Full Review Paul Parcellin Film Threat The two storylines don't seem to have a lot in common or connect in any way, but that changes near the end. Meanwhile, there are a lot of short, slightly disjointed scenes and a soundtrack that would be at home in a psychological thriller or horror film. william w OK, this movie takes some chances. And, for the most part, does a great job in delivering a very suspenseful film. Winding a story around sexual fetishes and psychological mind games, this movie could have easily gone off the rails. But it does not. The film has wonderful cinematography and solid story line. And is worthy of a watch. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Painful and lugubrious, amateurish acting matched with putrid, amateurish dialog. Or maybe I just wasn't in the mood for a vacuous and pretentious undergraduate attempt at movie-making. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Ambitious and vibrant cinematography brings this story alive and artistically conveys desire and passion. The themes of this film are provocative and artistically conveyed in a sexy story that circumvents the typical male gaze and meditates on intimacy as much as desire. There is light BDSM, but done in a way that is de-stigmatizing and consensual. Women's desires are planted firmly in the story arc and the female characters are not relegated to the whims of men, actually it's more the opposite. Maria Allred's performance really stands out as the taboo breaking Sylvia, also notable was the performance of Julie Webb as Louisa. There are lots of great nods to the city of Portland with shots across the city including the easter egg of Mary's Club: a notable feminist strip club, where Louisa's character performs to shake up her routine and imbibe her creative process. Excellent production value all around and some incredible montages which are artistic and express carnal desires in a dreamlike fashion. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member wow doesn't really get any worse than this jumbled mess of poor acting and horrible writing... this movie does not work on ANY level Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member If you're looking for something steamy to watch on a Saturday night, it's-a one spicy baby! Kidding aside, while this movie is quite sexy, it's so much more than that. Director (and lead actor!) Maria Allred set out with a bold vision and the result is a tense, smart and stylish film that will keep you simultaneously confused and intrigued all the way through. This film is very straightforward on the surface, seemingly intentionally so, and the viewer slowly falls into it's narrative trap before they realize it. It plays with the viewer and their assumed expectations of standard storytelling in a very fun way. When the film ended, I sat there for a moment and said to myself, "Damn. She got me." I'm really looking forward to what Maria Allred cooks up next. She's a filmmaker worth putting on your radar. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member From the beginning, the Texture of Falling pulls you in with its cinematography, sound design and beautiful details that create a world of its own. Maria Allred is a true talent and auteur with her writing and directing. Her sense of style falls somewhere between David Lynch and Stanley Kubrick. The beautiful Northwest city of Portland provides the perfect backdrop to the story as it portrays the opposite of what lies ahead for its ensemble cast of characters. Testing the boundaries of relationships and sexuality, Allred shows us just how far people are willing to go to feel a spark of sensation that can take control over their lives. The Texture of Falling is a dark visual poem that captivates the chaos, fantasy and passion of its characters. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Read all reviews
