Set in the rebellious 1970s, Duster is a stylish crime drama that blends retro flair with modern storytelling. It follows a getaway driver caught between loyalty to a crime boss and a covert alliance with a federal agent. With sharp performances, fast-paced direction, and rich visual design, the series delivers both thrilling action and layered character arcs. While the tone occasionally wavers between satire and seriousness, the show's energy, atmosphere, and standout leads make it a gritty, engaging ride through the moral gray zones of justice and loyalty.....

Like Get Millie Black, this series is more or less a sleeper hit for me. Mainly because of how the theme proceeds and how it's structured. Sure, the first couple of episodes were a little cluttered as it's introducing our characters, both main and side. Yet I would believe that it does get better as soon as the show progresses with both our main leads. Just a bit of a head's up. There might be some spoilers ahead. You have been warned.
It's set in the fictional side of the 1972 when Nina Hayes, played by Rachel Hilson, becomes the first black woman to work with the FBI and assigned to take down a known crime syndicate boss named Ezra Saxton, played by Keith David, with the help of an inside man named Jim Ellis, played by Josh Holloway. Jim is a talented getaway driver who drives his favorite 1970 Plymouth Duster, who Saxton trusts after saving his son by delivering a new heart to function with.
As the series goes by, we see our main leads work with others like Nina having to work with a partner named Awan Bitsui, played by Asivak Koostachin, as well as dealing with one of her superiors who keeps telling her not to put her nose into anyone's business too long or she would get killed. With Jim, he looks for clues about his brother's death, thinking that Saxton has something to do with it while also dealing with his parents, Wade and Charlotte, and his sister and niece, Izzy and Luna.
I know it might sound like it's still a little cluttered with all the side characters, but I will admit, the chemistry with the actors is well done. I love Nina and Awan working together to connect the dots on who was in league with Saxton as well as Nina trying to deliver pieces of what had happened to Jim's brother. I do admit the sister and niece are just there to be in the show for support, yet doesn't work too much with the plot itself since Jim worries about his niece, Luna, who is technically a growing teen. Meanwhile, we get the subplot about Izzy, the sister, fighting for an equal rights of recognition and acceptance for all lady truckers. It might sound unnecessary, yet I don't mind it. Since it actually happened in real life. It was the time period of when any form of feminism had occurred. It does pull through without casualties, thankfully, yet it was close enough that Saxton was close to killing Izzy off until he had figured out the truth between Jim and Nina at the end of the second-to-last episode.
We even see the times when we see Saxton's daughter and son get some quality time with Jim and his family, and they were fun, too. Enrique the Knife was also fun during his only episode when he's chasing Jim until they came into agreement later in the episode. There were other side characters introduced, yet most of them were forgettable by the time the episode they were in had finished. If you were to ask me my favorite episode, it would have to be both the time when Enrique was chasing Jim and the episode when Nina and Awan had to sneak into an insane asylum to find this one guy who might have been connected to Saxton.
The chemistry and the acting weren't the only things that had kept the show going. The action is great, as well as the car chasing. It does make me think back to some 70s-style movies that I've watched as a kid, and this series was authentic enough for that 70s vibe with the suspense and the action. It certainly was a sleeper hit that I was bummed out to know that there wouldn't be a second season, according to an article or two. What else could I say? Just another day when greedy corporate executives make rash decisions whether the view count was high or low. However, it's like how Get Millie Black was like. A nice one and done series that was at least entertaining. It's worth checking out if you're looking for some fun car chases, some good action, and FBI drama.
I will give both J. J. Abrams and LaToya Morgan credit where credit is due because they both had pulled off a fun little 70s style series such as this one. By the end of it, I'm gonna give Duster eight and a half Nina and Jim exchanging information out of ten. 8.5/10.
