Eddie Harrison film-authority.com ...bleak, hard and for-sure nasty-ass female-killer drama, but it deserves a different kind of reputation than most grindhouse cinema...this is more character study that exploitation film; almost like a female version of Taxi Driver from the same year... Rated: 3/5 Jan 23, 2024 Full Review Jason Shawhan Nashville Scene This is a very '70s film, so know that in some respects it is very retrograde in its depiction and analysis of trauma, but it's something very special and absolutely worth a watch. Sep 10, 2021 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com The Witch Who Came from the Sea is actually a lot more ambitious than its sleazier moments might suggest, both as a conceptualization of distressed female sexuality and problematic assessments of fairy tales and classic mythology. Rated: 3/5 Oct 8, 2020 Full Review C.H. Newell Father Son Holy Gore Works more as a psychological horror verging on slasher, not requiring such an ugly display of sexual violence as other 'popular' rape-revenge movies. Rated: 4/5 May 5, 2019 Full Review Chris Alexander Alexander On Film It all climaxes in one of the most affecting, tragic and strangely beautiful final acts I've ever seen a horror movie. If you can even call THE WITCH FROM THE SEA simply a horror movie. It is one, but it's so much more... May 30, 2018 Full Review Ian White Starburst If you ever find yourself arguing that the idiots behind the 'video nasties' list didn't have a clue what they were doing, The Witch Who Came from the Sea should be your Exhibit A. This film doesn't deserve its schlocky reputation. Rated: 9/10 Dec 15, 2017 Full Review Read all reviews

Logan D A media obsessed, father idolizing nympho who was traumatized in her youth is suspected of murder. First off, the poster is very creative in advertising the movie. I was hoping for a real witch with a scythe that came from the sea. Nope. This is about a disturbed woman that at once loves sex but hates men. Perkins shines as the complex Mollie, creepily entwining herself into the lives of others as friend and fiend. Such a beautiful conclusion. Very strange atmosphere. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/07/23 Full Review Crom W Very boring movie. The best part is the Movie Poster. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 05/09/23 Full Review wayne k A video nasty from the 70s that I'd never heard of before, The Witch Who Came From The Sea is a relentlessly bleak examination of childhood drama and the dangers of living in a fantasy world. Much of the film's elements, including acting, writing and cinematography, look and feel like they're right out of a soap opera. I could imagine this being a particularly dark episodes of Eastenders, and the bizarre line delivery often makes it hard to take the story seriously. It's a shame, because the plot itself has a lot to offer. We see the truly horrific effects that child abuse can have on a person, but rather than just having our lead scream and cry, we see a quiet struggle taking place just below the surface. She makes bad decisions, acts violently and slowly loses her mind. It's a film that takes patience to get through, because the pacing is consistently slow. The editing is choppy, probably because of the scenes which were removed, and some parts of it often just end abruptly. I'm currently watching a few video nasties for a podcast, so it was a good to start with one I've never even heard of before. Not one I would watch again, but definitely one with a great deal of merit. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review justin t Oh man was this was a boring film. There was no witch and there was only a little sea at the start. There was just some crazy girl who was raped by her father when she was really young and repressed it. We find this out through dull flashback sequences. There is so little violence here that I am amazed that this was a video nasty. She has a razor blade and no imagination. Should have been an actual witch then it would live up to the misleading title. Avoid this shockingly boring movie. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review KARL O Possibly the worse movie I've ever seen. Definitely the worst acting. Probably thinks it had a messsge. Seriously Criterion? Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/24/21 Full Review Audience Member a bit uncomfortable and not in a horror movie way Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Read all reviews
