In ancient times, the gods of Asgard fought and won a war against an evil race known as the Dark Elves. The survivors were neutralized, and their ultimate weapon -- the Aether -- was buried in a secret location. Hundreds of years later, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) finds the Aether and becomes its host, forcing Thor (Chris Hemsworth) to bring her to Asgard before Dark Elf Malekith (Christopher Eccleston) captures her and uses the weapon to destroy the Nine Realms -- including Earth.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

It may not be the finest film to come from the Marvel Universe, but Thor: The Dark World still offers plenty of the humor and high-stakes action that fans have come to expect.

Shubhra Gupta The Indian Express Loki is the only character who makes himself new and interesting. When he is around, Thor: The Dark World becomes a different film altogether. You wish there was more of him. The rest of it is metal clanking. Rated: 2.5/5 Mar 18, 2019 Full Review Larushka Ivan-Zadeh metro.co.uk This feels like a really, really, expensive episode of Doctor Who. In a good way. Rated: 4/5 Sep 6, 2017 Full Review Jason Bailey Flavorwire Save for Hiddleston's too-brief supporting turn, this is mighty forgettable stuff, a by-the-numbers sequel to what was already the slightest and least entertaining of the 'Avengers' components. Jun 18, 2016 Full Review JD Duran InSession Film Thor: The Dark World is a great continuation in the Marvel Universe and it’s a better direction than Iron Man 3. Rated: A- Aug 15, 2024 Full Review Joseph Garcia Dynamic Duel Podcast The high-fantasy worldbuilding and story align with what the Norse mythological superhero's adventures should be – generic villain notwithstanding. Rated: 4/5 Apr 16, 2024 Full Review Cory Woodroof For the Win (USA Today) It’s by no means a great movie or anything, but it’s got a very good Tom Hiddleston performance and moves at a satisfying clip. Henry S I don't dislike Thor: The Dark World but it just didn't do anything for me. Apart from a great performance from Tom Hiddleston, this is an extremely surface level and forgettable experience. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/21/25 Full Review James E One of the least interesting Mcu movies to date. Not much happens, most characters are less than interesting, and even the actors who have proven themselves to be vastly talented are forgettable and seem as though they want to be anywhere else. Some of the humor and choreography are well done. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/25 Full Review Mate P Thor: Dark World could be a very enjoyable movie if it was less overstuffed, especially at the end. The story is interesting, the characters are the same. The conflicts are simple, the dialogues too. It is no explained how the evil power works, it was confusing how someone could wield or destroy it (it is said they can't). The characters make some stupid decisions that don't make sense, but Loki was handled very well. By the end (including post credit), the movie becomes overstuffed, more like a marketing product, than a movie. It's not focused on the characters or the story. The cinematography is okay, the pacing is good, it's never too boring. I had a few issues with visual effects, because there were some scenes that were just badly handled. The cast is still great, it was funny seeing Stellan Skarsgård become crazy, his acting is spectacular. Thor: The Dark World is a movie that loses it's focus by the end and there are stupid character decisions throughout, but I managed to enjoy it pretty much. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/12/25 Full Review Infinityfights 6 La única excusa que usan para defender esto es "es mejor que el Marvel de ahora" osea, si pero dame argumentos vistos en la película para que me digas que es una buena película. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/11/25 Full Review Oisin B Thor: The Dark World is an absolute disasterclass. Worst MCU movie ever made. It had a boring villain, a boring plot and a stereotypical hero. As much as I love Thor in other movies, such as Ragnarok, Infinity War and Endgame, in this he just appears as nothing but a big, strong, heroic stereotype superhero, with no depth given to him at all. I am really disappointed with how Thor was done in this movie, because I think that Chris Hemsworth is a brilliant actor, but not even he could make up for the terrible writing of Thor. Malekeith the Dark Elf was also seemingly stereotypical villain that had even less depth than Thor. He has no interesting motives and no backstory that helps us understand his character. Not to mention his woeful character design. Malekeith is definitely one of, if not the, worst villains that Marvel have ever shown on screen. The one silver lining in this movie is Tom Hiddleson as Loki. This was in my opinion his best performance in the MCU. And even though he was the one good thing about the movie he still was only put in a minimal amount of scenes, so we barely got to see him. Overall I think this was a terrible movie with tedious writing, stereotypical characters, apart from one in Tom Hiddleson's Loki, but even this great character wasn't enough to save this abysmal excuse for a film. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/08/25 Full Review Samuel W This movie, while it still is enjoyable in some scenes, falls short and boring in so many others. With a villain who is clearly an afterthought and more insignificant than other past MCU villains, it’s hard to think of this movie as intimidating or dark when it all just feels so underwhelming. The best parts of the movie are Frigga and Loki, and they are underwhelmingly absent for most of the movie, and Odin is unbearable for the entirety of the runtime. The story itself is very entertaining but with such a string of events that are amazingly tone deaf, and so rapidly changing that it’s hard to think of this movie as comprehensive, but it has its moments that make for good scenes. All-in-all it is the happiest little slug I have had to get through. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/01/25 Full Review Read all reviews
