Ethan T Decent soundtrack of English language tunes (for some reason) and passable performances aside, this film is a trainwreck. No element of the plot makes a shred of sense, from the relationships between the characters developing in a split second to the already creaky premise. The film still manages, despite its eccentricities, to fall into every imaginable romantic comedy cliché. Mean old man attempting to influence a character's dreams? Shy woman with glasses loses glasses and becomes confident and beautiful? Dirty, comely, shaggy man finds soulmate (who evidently is justified in having an extramarital affair because, er, her husband does crosswords in bed)? Give us a break. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/28/21 Full Review Audience Member pelicula francesa entretenida 7/10 Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review michael d I was about to turn it off after the first 18 minutes. Melanie Bernier plays a repressed, mousy, yet attractive pianist who moves into an upstairs apartment in Paris. She shares a wall with a neighbor played by director Clovis Cornillac who spends his time inventing "sophisticated games" that I can't imagine anyone will ever buy. He has no discernible income, lives like a hermit, and acts like a complete asshole after she moves in next door. I'm sick of the overused "insufferable misanthrope who isn't all bad" trope, but there's a reason this movie has, at the time of this writing, an undeserved 100% rating with the critics. It has a unique storyline that is occasionally intriguing and places a high value on the non-physical connections that people can make. That's admirable, and interesting, but it's hard to care about anyone except Bernier's character. She's a beauty and he's a beast (whose public outbursts are inexcusable). And her sister is an repentant adulteress in that stereotypical casual way so common in French movies. Still, there's enough to satisfy most unabashed romantics, like myself, who are all too eager to forgive the inevitable weaknesses of most romantic movies.
