Critics Consensus

Vantage Point has an interesting premise that is completely undermined by fractured storytelling and wooden performances.

Rick M This movie had some real potential, but they absolutely butchered it. Don't waste your time. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/17/24 Full Review Jace E I absolutely love the idea of Vantage Point. I am fascinated by the idea of the same story told through different points of view, all culminating in an "aha moment" where the terrorist plot is revealed. Unfortunately, this movie does not deliver on that promise. The plot is intensely convoluted and jam-packed into the 90 minute runtime. We spend way too much time with some characters, not enough time with others and many plot points are either pointless or left unfinished. The character depth is non-existent and I left wondering why the movie needed to be told from different vantage points (sadly). I would love to see what a strong writing team and director could do with this concept, because on its surface it is intriguing. Best Character: Howard Best Quote: "The beauty of American arrogance is that they can't imagine a world where they're not a step ahead." - Suarez Best Scene: The first jump back to the beginning. Note: Forest Whitaker is the only strong actor of the bunch and I loved his scenes. Note 2: Hearing Dennis Quaid shout in his hand for "Control!" over and over again was particularly irksome. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/16/24 Full Review David P This was the first movie I’ve ever witnessed an audience get angry at while watching. The “rewind” concept was interesting the first two times, but eventually, the crowd grew tired and began booing the movie and yelling, “Oh come on!” after each new flashback. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/29/24 Full Review Audience Member This wasn't a bad movie, but I also didn't love it. I feel like they did the rewind one or two times too many. I did think the premise was cool, but unfortunately a certain actor is so obviously bad that the twist was very weak. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 05/20/24 Full Review Nathan W I'm torn on how to review this one. On the one hand, I found the premise intriguing. Granted we've seen movies like this before, but never with the stakes quite so high. On the other hand, the storytelling was uneven and the acting felt stiff overall. The first half of the movie was dull and repetitive. Like they were trying to take a simple concept and pad it out to feature length with as little effort as possible. But the second half... was balls to the wall action. With each passing scene the story got more complicated, more exciting and more ridiculous. It really felt like 2 different people directed this. If the whole film had been like the last 45 minutes, this would be an easy 4 stars. But as it stands, what it did well was not enough to overcome the boredom and monotony we had to suffer through to get there. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 05/13/24 Full Review Spikecat 38/100 It loses its potential with a bland and copy- pasted story, alongside a short runtime to make it worse.
