Hendrik Heyst (Fredric March) is an isolationist, a man who lives on an island in the Dutch West Indies and wishes to remain completely alone. His worldview is challenged when he meets Alma (Betty Field) and falls in love, although he tries to stay true to his philosophy by sending her away. Before that happens, though, a trio of bandits led by Mr. Jones (Cedric Hardwicke) arrives and threatens him, forcing Heyst to take action in order to save himself and his new love.
