Takeshi Kitano, noto per la sua brillante carriera televisiva come comico, ci sorprende con la sua opera prima dietro la macchina da presa, "Violent Cop." Questo film del 1989, parte della trilogia yakuza di Kitano, si distingue come un affondo audace nel mondo del crimine e della violenza.
Kitano, nel suo ruolo da protagonista, incarna Azuma, un poliziotto dallo stile sbrigativo, una figura che ci riporta alla memoria dell'ispettore Callaghan, ma con una svolta più cupa e disturbante. Azuma, interpretato magistralmente da Kitano stesso, emerge come una forza di pura violenza, una figura complessa che va al di là dei canoni tradizionali dei poliziotteschi.
Il film è una sinfonia visiva, con Kitano che si esprime attraverso lunghi piani sequenza e inquadrature oblique, trasmettendo la sua visione del dolore e della disperazione. I movimenti astratti dei personaggi riflettono un'emozione incontenibile, e la regia di Kitano mostra un'abilità straordinaria nel creare tensione e drammaticità attraverso l'uso della cinematografia.

1980s japan will never look bad... I mean maybe a director will do a bad job with it but its hard. The problem with this film is that there is no emotion. It seems as if nihilism and lack of moral flow through this film. It just leaves the movie boring and emotionless. Probably a watch for serious fans of japanese gangster movies otherwise a skip.

Takeshi Kitano's directorial debut is raw, rough around the edges, violent (who'd have thought it) and very bleak. It's not the greatest example of his powers but it provides a vital start point to his career, and the score, despite being at odds with the brutality on screen, somehow works brilliantly, adding a layer of beauty to the dark and disturbing turns the plot takes.

The prime opera of Takeshi Kitano as director, tell us the story of Azuma, a heterodox policeman who is immersed in a spiral of crime and corruption because in the course of a investigation discover that Iwaki,a friend of the protagonist is supplying drugs to yakuzas, and after a incident that if i tell it suppose a spoiler, Azuma starts a particular crusade against the yakuzas with a ending that show us the style that will have the rest of the films of Takeshi Kitano.
That style is a nihilist conception of the story, a very black humour or a cutting edition of the scenes added to the elipsis is the visiting card of one of the biggest filmmakers from Japan, with a soundtrack signed by Daisaku Kume with jazz touches that recall to noir films from the 40s and the 50s.
In conclusion, this film is a vital part of the filmography of Kitano and a must be watched movie if you want to learn about this great nippon artist.

I love Takeshi Kitano and this is his first, and perhaps best film as a director. It's unflinching in its depiction of violence as Kitano plays a cop unafraid to smack people around to get what he wants. Kitano also has a distinct style, and I think it is evident here in this first film. The story is nothing new, but it is how its told that makes it compelling along with Kitano's tough guy persona that makes Dirty Harry look soft. The is a must watch in my opinion.
