kevin w A Brit musical. By Alfred Hitchcock, no less? Yes, a leap, I know, but the story about how a younger Strauss was inhibited by the elder does have its merits, the main of which is the triumphant reveal of the Blue Danube to its Austrian audience for the first time. There are no surprises, true, but Hitchcock manages to keep the fluff to a minimum, given the genre. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review joel h Hitchcock was still discovering his strengths at this point in his career, but musical comedy is not his forte. Strauss' Great Waltz meanders through a story about the inspiration behind The Blue Danube. And while I love the song, I found it very difficult to pay attention to this film. It's mostly fluff. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Hitchcock described this film as the 'lowest ebb of his career'...you can see why. This whole period of his British films is so poor really, only one or two of them really still stand up to scrutiny and those are the ones where he seemed to have more creative control. This feels a million miles away from anything he would go on to do. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Master of Suspense Alfred Hitchcock directs this...pretty lame semi-musical about Strauss writing "The Blue Danube". Hitchcock would later say that it was a low-point in his career and he essentially made it because he wanted to keep working and had nothing better to do. One thing I can say for it (and Hitchcock seemed to agree) it taught him a good deal about how sound should be used in film, and he learned new tricks in sound editing and melding music with the picture, and as he would one day mix the two so wonderfully, I have to give this film some credit. It isn't particularly worth your time, but I'm happy Hitchcock had the opportunity to learn on this picture. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Coming on the verge of his late British run of masterworks, this light musical comedy has always been overshadowed, and Hitch didn't think much of it either, but watch it for entertainment (and the director's increasing visual sophistication), and it's quite good. Andre Sennwald New York Times It exhibits little of the technical ingenuity which the Hitchcock name might lead us to expect. But it does not diminish the loveliness of "The Blue Danube" and it suspires amiably against its nineteenth century appointments. Jun 2, 2015 Full Review Ann Ross Maclean's Magazine Charmingly screened Brttlsh-Gaumont picture which dramatizes the creation of the Strauss waltz. Jul 23, 2019 Full Review TV Guide Dull costume drama directed by a young Alfred Hitchcock during what he has called "the lowest ebb" of his career. Rated: C Mar 8, 2013 Full Review Fernando F. Croce CinePassion The perception of it as a fumbled trifle is dismissed as soon as Hitchcock lays out the artist's dilemma, the kind that would keep hounding him: "Either you're a musician, or a confectioner."
