This film was a blind buy based on Ringo Lam's name on the cover, and I was very pleased that he didn't let me down. The story follows an ex-cop who now owns a bar, as he finds himself looking after a particularly boozy customer one night, only to find out that this young lady has stolen some cash from some bad people and they soon turn up to get their money.
The film has some great action bits, and a few really crazy car chases through Hong Kong that had me wincing, as they destroy a helluva lot of property.
Well worth a rental at the very least.

We're all driven by one thing. Money.
A former police officer thinks life may be slower as a bartender. One random night a desperate woman falls in his lap in the alley. She is pursued by a pimp like gangster boyfriend and his thug friends. That night he runs into his brother who has a briefcase full of money. The night gets complicated and intricate for the bartender.
"In a greedy world people will never have a future."
Ringo Lam, director of Maximum Risk, Full Alert, Replicant, In Hell, Triangle, Full Contact, The Adventurers, and School on Fire, delivers Wild City. The storyline for this picture is just okay and not as compelling as it could have been. The action is good but not outstanding and the acting is just okay.
"Good luck, bad luck, life still goes on."
This was recently added to the Netflix online queue so I added it to the wish list. This was just okay and I didn't find the main character as compelling or dramatic as he could have been. This is very average and only worth viewing if nothing better is on.
"How do I get my mom back?"

There's nothing bad about this movie, but there's nothing that good about it either. You'd think after Ringo Lam's decade-long inactivity in the Hong Kong film industry that he'd come back with something a little more biting and edgier than this. The film certainly gets the job done in giving you something that's watchable, something that won't make you pull your hair out, but it's content to be just that. I don't think it ever wants to be anything more than what it is and I think that's part of what holds it back. Not to mention the fact that the characters lack depth. Another thing is the fact that the lead characters, for the most part, are always a step or two ahead of the villains and that makes caring about anything that happens lack importance or relevance. They either get the best of the bad guys in fight scenes or chase sequences, so what's the point of putting them in tense situations if they always end up with the upper hand anyway. At least there is a part of the film where the leads are working at a disadvantage or are trying to save someone. It was too late by that point, though, so it doesn't really amount to much. Not to mention that it feels kinda forced in there, like they figured it out too late that they needed to give something so the leads wouldn't just waltz through every obstacle put in front of them. The acting is decent enough, but there's nothing special about it. Like the actors just don't look motivated enough to be there or to give their best. Though, to be fair, the script didn't really do them any favors. This just ends up being underwhelming, to be honest, despite being a decently made film. It's just like Ringo Lam was asleep through the entirety of the filming. I hate to say that this feels lifeless, because I've seen worse movies than this, but there's literally nothing about this that felt like it had any real effort put into it. This is an average movie, at best, but it's one of the worst average movies I've ever seen and I wouldn't recommend it. Here's to hoping Ringo Lam's next film is a vast improvement over this one.
