Scott Weinberg TheHorrorShow A virtual remake of The Evil Dead, but it does showcase some pretty impressive gore. Aug 24, 2015 Full Review Felix Vasquez Jr. Cinema Crazed May get slack for being a completely shameless take on Sam Raimi's horror classic, but I admired it for taking the premise and injecting its own flavor. Nov 1, 2014 Full Review Anton Bitel Projected Figures Yep, 'wither' must be Swedish for 'the evil dead', as this Nordic nasty slavishly drums out every beat of Sam Raimi's 1981 classic, positioning itself as unofficial 'premake' to Fede Alvarez's authorised reimagining Evil Dead (2013). 3R1C 4 Evil dead from wish💀 Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/15/23 Full Review Audience Member It's got a low budget, but that doesn't stop it from being a rad little Demon movie. People keep calling it a Swedish Evil Dead remake, while I think that's pretty fair, I still think that's an oversimplification, it's got more of its own thing going on than just aping the Raimi movie. If anything I'd say it feels like a movie that fits in the same universe. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/05/19 Full Review jesse o The term rip-off is, sometimes, thrown around very freely. What I mean by that is that, out of 7 billion people on earth, it's entirely possible that two (or even more) people come up with the same idea at the different times. That doesn't mean that one was ripping off the other or vice versa. That's not to say that there aren't cases of films shamelessly ripping off from. Like, for examples, the Transmorphers 'franchise' from The Asylum (best known for Sharknado) completely ripping off the Transformers is a perfect example of this. But, to be fair to Transmorphers, the fact that it's a rip-off is sort of the joke. I don't know if it's fair to say that Quentin Tarantino has been accused of the same thing, I mean I'm sure he has been, but that wouldn't be fair to the man. Tarantino very much wears his influences on his sleeves, but he's been able to add his own little unique touches that make his films undeniably unique, even if they may be inspired by older flicks. The term rip-off is also a negative because it implies that the film in question is bad. Raiders of the Lost Ark is a great example of a film that is VERY similar to a 50s adventure film called Secret of the Incas, starring Charlton Heston. Nobody can tell me with a straight face that Raiders is a terrible film. But I digress, the reason I start off with this is that this film was criticized (by two out of the three reviews on Rotten Tomatoes) for being a shameless Evil Dead ripoff. And there's certainly something to that, I'm not gonna sit here and say that there aren't comparisons to be made, because there clearly are. Hell, even the description on Amazon (where I watched this) makes mention that this is a bloody Swedish tribute to the Evil Dead. And I certainly would agree with everything in the last part of that sentence. I felt that the film had enough of its own unique little touches that it, somewhat, stood up on its own. It stood up on its own with crutches, but still. Perhaps the thing that's most noticeable about the film is that it goes, relatively, the full 96 minutes (which is how long the movie is with credits). The credits themselves start at around 94 minutes, so they're not that long in the slightest. The reason I make mention of that is because of the way this movie was paced, I didn't think, that at the pace they went, they could have gone for 90+ minutes without feeling repetitive. And, surprisingly enough, the film kept moving forward and adding fresh elements to throw a wrench in the proceedings. The 'shit' hits the fan at around the 30 minute mark and it's, pretty much, a nonstop horror from then on. Because of that, however, there's no real time for anything to really sink in. The character development is, practically, nonexistent. This movie has so much blood and gore that, I'm quite surprised that the entire cabin it took place in didn't have a fresh coat of red 'paint' on the walls. That's how much is actually spilled in this movie. It sort of reminds me, in that way, of Braindead/Dead Alive (the Peter Jackson film). This is another movie that was kind of a New Zealand version of Evil Dead, except it was so much more bloody, gory and over-the-top ridiculous. But I think that, unlike Evil Dead and Braindead, this film doesn't exactly have the same tongue-in-cheek humor. And they sure as shit don't have a Swedish Bruce Campbell. I think that's where the film missed the mark. I love the blood and gore here. I thought it was tremendous, particularly for what, I'm assuming, is a low-budget flick. It was top-notch to the point that one believes that they forgot to match that gore with an equally strong script. The movie's not poorly-written or anything of the sort, but there's just nothing to the characters and to the 'world'. Even the Evil Dead remake felt like it had a reason for existing within the context of that universe that's already been established. This movie exists just because the filmmakers wanted to make a tribute to one of their favorite horror films. And they certainly succeeded in capturing the blood and the gore associated with The Evil Dead, but it didn't capture any of the comedy and the strong characters that made that movie so successful. That's why I don't feel that I can give this anything more than 2.5 stars. It's just missing the elements that pushed Evi Dead to legendary status. I know they weren't trying to surpass their inspiration for making this, but I think they should have studied more what made those films so great and then try your hand at a tribute. That might sound like a negative, but I really do mean it as constructive criticism. I just think they only capture one element of that franchise. But, I digress, the fact that this is an unabashed gorefest makes this slightly better than I would have anticipated. It falls just short of being good, but there's nothing wrong with this if you just want a film that's full of thrills. This one certainly won't disappoint. If you're looking for the second coming of the Evil Dead, then you're barking up the wrong tree. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member The evil dead meets the walking Dead. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member Wither is pretty much an unofficial Swedish remake of 'The Evil Dead'. We are provided with some impressive and inventive special effects that help make an enjoyable viewing experience. A Swedish Gary Barlow also seems to star in this movie... Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member Plenty of gore, story wasn't too bad, except the main character, he's a bit stupid and useless. But otherwise this movie is quite decent.
