Patrick Cavanaugh The Wolfman Cometh While the actual narrative leaves much to be desired, the overall atmosphere is undeniably effective, wholeheartedly replicating what it was like to watch creepy TV specials back in the '80s. Rated: 4/5 Sep 20, 2023 Full Review Glenn Dunks Glenn Dunks I suspect those whose childhoods are marked by rabbit eared television sets-screening snow-covered local broadcasts and do-it-yourself commercials for local pizza joints or small-town psychics-will find much to enjoy... Jay H Interesting premise that gets old real fast. The fake TV commercials are the best part, but those quickly become repetitive. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/31/24 Full Review Daniel P Outstanding, and reminds me of watching TV as a kid. Barely SD quality, and looks as choppy as TV back then. Hope they make a sequel to the sequel of this, so we can have a trilogy. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/04/24 Full Review johnathon w Fun little special that is technically well made but gets too hung up on that. The cast and crew do a brilliant job capturing the look of feel of local '80s television, from the news broadcast to the commercials, which are eerily spot on. However, astute observers will note it is in wide-screen over the standard 4:3 of the time. The problem is that they are too hung up on that technique, and spend far too little time in the haunted house, setting up the actual spooks. A fun watch at parties but not much else. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member I grew up directly between Youngstown, OH and Pittsburgh, PA, which meant that growing up, I got to see UHF channels from Cleveland, Wheeling, Stuebenville and everywhere in between. There are still local jingles that I know by heart — Youngstown's Remnant Room — and when I see the staticky look of this ancient television, it warms my heart beyond belief. Beyond Superhost and Chilly Billy, I can remember characters like Barnaby and the local news teams that had no hope of ever working for the networks. The WNUF Halloween Special could have been horrible, but I get the feeling that its creator Chris LaMartina grew up watching plenty of Baltimore TV* (he probably knew Captain Pitt as Captain Chesapeake on WBUF (but we both may have not known that he was also Ghost Host), because this is so authentic that I thought that I went back in time. A home recording of WNUF's Halloween special that aired on October 31, 1987, this tells the story of Frank Stewart's investigation of the Webber House, the site of the Spirit Board Murders. He's brought along a priest and Louis and Claire Berger, psychic investigators who use a cat named Shadow to speak to the dead. By the end of the night, the evil inside the house will show itself. And no one is safe. The story may have been told before, but its the entire package that is perfect. There are references to Dust Devil, R.O.T.O.R. and so many more movies, plus it captures that strange moment of the pre 90s when UHF stations would air just about anything, when major bloopers happened almost every day and something like a series of occult murders could happen while you watched. Producer Jimmy George confirmed that WNUF TV28 was inspired by Baltimore's WNUV TV54, a similar TV station that was independently owned until the mid-90s. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member This was one of the best horror movies I've seen in a while. On such a low budget, this film more than surpasses expectations. With an ending well developed and yet still unexpected, the filmmakers managed to achieve more in the last 10 minutes of the film than many modern horror movies can overall. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Beautifully made and one of a kind. If you enjoy Americana and 80's throwbacks, I highly suggest checking this one out. It's absolutely amazing how accurate this was to my local news station growing up, it's designed to be. They keep the location ambivalent so that it could be in Small-town USA. I will say I watched this with someone who didn't grow up in the US and didn't understand why this movie was so special, so it's not for everyone but for the ones who get it, you'll really love it.
