Helen Brown Norden Vanity Fair The picture is Jolson's and the scenes without him might almost as well have been scrapped in the first place. May 17, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews

Steve D A few amusing bits does not make a film. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/04/24 Full Review Audience Member All-star cast (including Al Jolson, Dolores Del Rio, Kay Francis & Dick Powell) and two Busby Berkeley production numbers (the beautiful "Don't Say Goodnight" and the offensive "Goin' to Heaven on a Mule") incorporated into a slick but empty "Grand Hotel"-like plot. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Must be seen to be believed. One of the strangest films I've ever witnessed. But tread carefully: there's some TRULY offensive material here (mostly having to do with the portrayal of blacks). Still, it's an interesting window into what was once considered acceptable entertainment. The plot is a tertiary concern; the film's raison d'etre is its musical numbers, as well as some surprisingly bawdy comedy. Released just before the Hays Code would begin to become more strictly enforced, you get the sense while watching that the filmmakers were trying to break every taboo they could while there was still time. Have a look, but YOU'VE BEEN WARNED! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member a 'grand hotel' clone moved from hotel to a nightclub Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Dolores Del Rio ,Kay Francis ,Ricardo Cortez .Dick Powell , and more this film is a high camp classic,The film's most outrageous moment, however, is an uninhibited chunk of homosexual humor on the dance floor ("Boys will be boys!", crows Jolson) years ahead of its time, also has a variety of singers, dancers, comedy, and a cast that all have a story, lavish, classical stough Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member It's politically incorrect in every possible way an old movie can be. IT's also an incredible entertainment with some top notch Busby Berkley set pieces. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews
