Audience Member The premise of the film is this - a man wakes in a hole, not knowing how he got there, and two masked men loom from above, not answering the man's pleads for an explanation. Not only is that the premise, that is actually the entire plot of the movie! And I don't mean that as a sarcastic or condescending comment... it literally is the plot for the entire movie! We learn nothing more than that... no answers are given, no explanations, no further developments, no revelations - the audience is kept in the dark just as much as the kidnapped man is from beginning to end... and when the end credits roll, we learn absolutely nothing! Some may argue that he lack of answers may make the experience more terrifying - no reasons for kidnapping someone means that every viewer is a potential victims no matter what their social status or position - but I would argue it is just lazy writing. All we see is a man walking in circles (literally) within a hole for 83 minutes, crying for help yet receiving none. It really is a short film concept stretched beyond it's limit to feature length. However, why did I honor it with a rather high rating of 3 stars? I could say it was the performance of the lead (which was quite effective, by the way), but it really comes down to a mere bias - I tend to embrace high concept films such as this which feature a minimal of characters in a single setting all within the context of the a thriller (Sleuth, Deathtrap, Death and the Maiden, Finder's Fee, 24th Day, Devot, etc.). This very reason alone makes me more forgiving than I should be, thus those who seldom approach psychological thrillers of this ilk should consider the rating to be just 2 (or perhaps 2 and a 1/2 stars) and not the 3 which I bestowed upon it.
