Audience Member First episode was nearly great. Every episode after that was a deepening betrayal of the promise it showed in the beginning. The writers borrowed a veneer of Japanese history and aesthetic, cherry picked some action and anime tropes, and then proceeded to spit in the face of the culture and the world they pretend to admire at every opportunity. The characters are incoherent children. The action is a blur of motion meant to distract us from how badly choreographed it all is. Entire episodes seemed dedicated to fetish content. The animation is an allegory for the show. On a small screen or at a distance, it looks like art. Upon closer inspection, it's PS2 models with lazy cell shading. This is an important note, because much of the story and action felt like something cribbed from a video game. Did they fail to get funding for a game and somehow wine up with a Netflix show?
