Lance C. Fantastic first season! Hopefully we get more because I want to see this story all the way through! Like I'm willing to suspend some belief, but did the soldiers forget how gates work? There's a bunch of weird things happening, but I'll just point out a few. One, Ringo and Taigen fight so hard to get the soldiers to just look out over the wall and notice thousands of soldiers approaching. Shouldn't they have been doing that anyway, soldiers manning a wall? Two: the thousands of soldiers just past through what looked like 3 or 4 gates as if they were left open - the show just kind of glosses over that, except for the last one, where they get in through treachery. But, then, Akemi and Seki, just the two of them, are enough to trap the entire army inside the castle, even without any kind of lock, just their body weight. So the gates don't do a thing on the way in, but on the way out, it just takes two people to stop the army of burning soldiers, desperate to get out. Also, the soldiers just kind of disappear. There's a ton of open space in the walls, Ringo, Taigen, are fine through the fire. But it seems like the fire knows to wipe out every gun soldier. Also, that fire moves as if the entire castle is made of kindling and gasoline. But stops at the outer wall, so Akemi can just hang out on that bridge forever. Just weird. Hand wave some stuff at that kind of thing. Heiji has the keys to every gate, let's say. Seemed rushed and lazy. Anyhoo, besides that last episode, great stuff. Every episode after that was a deepening betrayal of the promise it showed in the beginning. The writers borrowed a veneer of Japanese history and aesthetic, cherry picked some action and anime tropes, and then proceeded to spit in the face of the culture and the world they pretend to admire at every opportunity. The characters are incoherent children. The action is a blur of motion meant to distract us from how badly choreographed it all is. Entire episodes seemed dedicated to fetish content. The animation is an allegory for the show. On a small screen or at a distance, it looks like art. Upon closer inspection, it's PS2 models with lazy cell shading. This is an important note, because much of the story and action felt like something cribbed from a video game. Did they fail to get funding for a game and somehow wine up with a Netflix show?
