Jen's husband recently died in a hit-and-run, and the sardonic widow is determined to solve the crime. Optimistic free spirit Judy has recently suffered a tragic loss of her own. The ladies meet at a support group and, despite their polar-opposite personalities, become unlikely friends. As the women bond over bottles of wine and a shared affinity for "The Facts of Life," Judy tries to shield Jen from a shocking secret that could destroy her life as she knows it. The dark comedy -- which explores the weirdly funny sides of grief, loss and forgiveness -- features a cast that includes TV veterans Christina Applegate and Ed Asner.

Critics Consensus

Dead to Me doesn't always deliver on the gallows humor that it promises, but the sterling duo of Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini elevates the series above its pulpier aspects -- offering a deeply moving relationship shaped by mutual grief.

Judy Berman TIME Magazine Informed by Jen and Judy's superficial brand of feminism, the dialogue rings true. Even better is the chemistry between [Linda] Cardellini and [Christina] Applegate, ideal foils who balance keen comic instincts with raw emotion. Dec 5, 2019 Full Review Linda Holmes NPR Dead to Me is often very, very funny - but it's also rooted in profound emotion that makes everything matter. Dec 5, 2019 Full Review Brian Lowry CNN.com While sustaining this sort of story is invariably a juggling act, this has the self-assured feel of a hit-and-run tale that's destined to keep running for at least a while. Dec 5, 2019 Full Review Elizabeth Garcia But Why Tho? A Geek Community Dead to Me is an extremely bingeable television that ends on a cliffhanger. It is a powerful show that takes viewers through a whirlwind of emotions. Rated: 9.5/10 Jan 22, 2023 Full Review Brian Lloyd entertainment.ie Funny, bleak, wrapped up in slick visuals and smart performances, 'Dead To Me' is another worthy addition to Netflix's repertoire of female-led comedies. Dec 5, 2019 Full Review Tilly Pearce metro.co.uk There are several beats to this show where you can see what's coming up, but then there are others that take a complete right angle and head off somewhere new, keeping us on our toes while making us comfortable at the same time. Audience Member Good opening seasons with some interesting moments and intrigue. But, having seen season 2 and 3. Don't waste your time with this show. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/18/24 Full Review TI H I see a trend in chick-flick entertainment, wherein suburban house moms commit crimes and must spend two or three seasons avoiding exposure. These tales tend to be thrillers. Discombobulated “keystone cop” moms are always trying to keep their secrets from police officers and family members. The moms generally qualify as MILF, I should add. ////////// Hey, do not misunderstand me. All of this is great. Keep it comin’, Hollywood. It’s stale, predictable, whatever--but we in the audience keep begging for more. I’m no saint. I say: Give me WEEDS. Give me BIG LITTLE LIES. And hear this: we want (mostly Caucasian) hot mommas acting badly and somehow getting away with murder. That’s what this show, DEAD TO ME, basically is. Somehow, for some godawful reason, by some act of universal injustice, white soccer moms get off. (At least so far.) //////////////// I’m not even going to give you the setup. DEAD TO ME is a cookie-cutout premise. But what I will say is this: if you can get past the seen-it-already-done-it mindset, you will see that Christina Applegate and Linda Cartelli are creating a gloriously memorable dynamic duo. Batman and Robin, Laurel and Hardy, Hannibal Lecter and Agent Starling. . .an’ Jen ‘n’ Judy. . .maybe Bonnie ‘n’ Clyde. I must admit: I grew weary waiting for Judy to confess to Jen, so I fast-forwarded through several episodes, but the climax of the season opened up a wound that I didn’t even know existed. Our two main characters--one wishy-washy and sweet, one practically dominatrix and sour--became peers. Yes, I was annoyed by how predictable their equalization became, but I was tenderized by how effective it was. This is a good first season. I look forward to 2 and 3. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/17/24 Full Review vincent p Chemistry between Jen and Judy was perfect, very believable characters! They played off each other very well. I thought the script writing was excellent, the twists and turns were realistic. As with all series they do tend to get a bit repetitious in later seasons but "Dead to me" was repetitious in a good way. Enjoyable series! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/31/24 Full Review Kelly Ann V personally i found this show very intriguing and funny Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/20/23 Full Review Jess C One of the best shows I've ever watched! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/18/23 Full Review Gareth v The chemistry between Applegate & Cardellini is what keeps this show bubbling along, even when the jokes don't always hit the mark.
