When the disappearance of a young girl grips the city of Baltimore on Thanksgiving 1966, the lives of two women converge on a fatal collision course. Maddie Schwartz (Natalie Portman), a Jewish housewife seeking to shed a secret past and reinvent herself as an investigative journalist, and Cleo Johnson (Moses Ingram), a mother navigating the political underbelly of Black Baltimore while struggling to provide for her family. Their disparate lives seem parallel at first, but when Maddie becomes fixated on Cleo's mystifying death, a chasm opens that puts everyone around them in danger. From visionary director Alma Har'el, "Lady in the Lake" emerges as a feverish noir thriller and an unexpected tale of the price women pay for their dreams.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Dense with intriguing drama if too muddled by digressions and stylistic flourishes, Lady in the Lake is a well-acted mystery with a lot on its mind.

Portman and Ingram deliver thoroughly committed performances, but they’re too often forced to compete with heavy-handed atmospherics, all skewed camera angles and dim lighting and rapid-fire cutaways. Go to Full Review

Fortunately, through a magnificent performance from Ingram, Cleo tells her own story with a power rarely seen on TV for a woman with so many decks stacked against her. Go to Full Review

While Lady in the Lake sometimes seems overloaded, it’s also far more intelligent, affecting and inventive than its pulpy title suggests. Go to Full Review

With its misshaps and debatable elements, 'Lady in the Lake' is a small discovery that deserves to be salvaged from the barrage of weekly streaming releases. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Lady in the Lake is literally too dark, complicated and grim to be much fun for anybody. Even the actors look unhappy. Go to Full Review

Alice f Jun 3 Absolutely great series, told from many perspectives. Found this quite relatable See more Gareth v Mar 3 A rather mundane effort that never really gets out of first gear. The premise is an interesting one, shame it's so dull. See more Tyler W Jan 13 Enjoyed the production and acting in this one, some of the trippy psychological elements went a little too far but I could understand what they were going for. See more Avindu G 10/07/2024 A drama about two women fighting two different battles to achieve a common goal. A drama about freedom told with magnificent visuals supported with great music. Dynamic set of characters that enables a wide exploration into the western society that's undergoing rapid change. Sincere performances by the cast full of expression. There are no heroines even the central characters are criticized for their selfish desperations. It's different not the typical thriller most of us come looking for yet succeeds in keeping any viewer engaged till the very end. Absence of a one central theme makes this watch even more worthwhile. See more NASHVILLE I @Nshvlleindie 09/26/2024 They took themselves so seriously that they forgot to entertain. The writers, actors, director, everyone broods so hard while trying to act mature that they come off as stone characters without personality. Natalie Portman underwhelms; not her best. The different narratives are also layered sloppy. Why are we paying attention to the Jewish side of town? The African American side of town? It feels aimless and random, because the narrative's sloppy. I know the writers though they created a clever headgame, but this is a disappointing product. See more Arya S @AnyaS 09/03/2024 Lost interest after two episodes due to so much cutting back and forth between the to stories. See more Read all reviews
