What to Know

Critics Consensus

Recalling the entrancing atmosphere of Shinichirō Watanabe's past works if not quite matching their high bar for originality, Lazarus is a kinetic anime with no shortage of provocative ideas.

It’s a mess but, like the famous Eton pudding, hard to resist. Go to Full Review

This repetitive yet iterative framing feels like a ritual, and the show is filled with religious imagery and musings about the nature of divinity. Go to Full Review

Like the space cowboys and ronin searching for purpose in his past series, the personalities populating “Lazarus” are anguished people navigating a broken world... Sometimes vibes are all we’ve got, and it's OK to be good with that feeling. Go to Full Review

What I've seen of Lazarus so far isn't great. It's fine -- good, even. But it's ambitious as hell, featuring a killer soundtrack and creatives working on it with major bona fides that have earned the benefit of the doubt in my book. Go to Full Review

Just know you'll be doing a lot of the legwork, since Lazarus on i's own prioritizes antihero action flick fight scenes over nuanced social commentary. Go to Full Review

I'm blown away by Lazarus! The characters and story are captivating. The animation is top-notch, the themes are thought-provoking, and the animated cinematography is exceptional. It's a must see series from creator of Cowboy Bebop (anime)! Go to Full Review

William H Oct 13 I was really excited to hear the creator of Cowboy Beebop made something new. After the first episode I was pumped for the great combat and beautiful graphics the show seemed to promise. Most of the way through, I found it hard to care. The acting is ok, the story drags on, characters are introduced and gone in one episode. Some of the places they go they end up doing nothing related to the main plot, its like a show made of random side quests. I forgot about the original story pretty fast. See more Narkanin Sep 6 Dont listen to the people saying this show isn't good. No, it's not Cowboy Bebop, but the animation is beautiful, the characters are good and the story is decent. People will rave over absolute trash like Solo Leveling and then call an actual story boring and slow. See more Christopher M Aug 31 This was an ok anime that needed more development story wise. The animation was beautiful but if the plot has no substance and it drags on, then what's point? This is nothing like the directors previous work. See more Jay C Aug 21 The only downside is that it should have been longer. I'd have loved to get more details and backstory. The characters are interesting, the music and action are amazing, and the story is really well written. It's also a very poignant critique on the state of humanity and how apathetic most governments and people treat the existential threat of climate change. See more Drew V Aug 17 This really did not come together. Nothing about the world or stakes of the central threat are delved into. It is supposed to be a near-future dystopia but everyone behaves like an alien and the dialogue is just so off-kilter. Some solid animation and art but due to the near-future/realism set-up none of it is particularly inspired. See more Steven Y Aug 7 What a great story and amazing animation. Well done I hope to see more of stuff like this on HBO MaX. See more Read all reviews
