Critics Consensus

Soaring high with its immaculate production design and acutely well-observed characters, Masters of the Air can stand proud alongside its sibling series Band of Brothers and The Pacific.

Mike Hale New York Times Orloff and Shiban make choices that are in some cases puzzling, in others explicable but dramatically wrongheaded. Mar 15, 2024 Full Review Graeme Blundell The Australian It was tough to make out what was going on, and it’s the same with Masters of the Air. The fog of war is deep indeed. Feb 17, 2024 Full Review Michael Idato The Age (Australia) Masters of the Air attempts the same [as Band of Brothers and The Pacific] but with less success. And yet, it holds itself together. Mostly. Cary Joji Fukunaga’s direction is crisp. Rated: 3/5 Feb 2, 2024 Full Review Archi Sengupta LeisureByte.com History buffs and lovers of drama and war shows will have a field day with this series that keeps it real and moving. Rated: 3.5/5 Jul 4, 2024 Full Review Joonatan Itkonen Toisto.net Masters of Air isn’t just a good TV series, it’s an all-time great one. Easily comparable to Band of Brothers as a colossal prestige drama, the kind that we’ll look back on in another 20 years, wondering how good we had it. Rated: 5/5 Jul 3, 2024 Full Review Sarah Marrs Lainey Gossip At this point, Hanks and Spielberg are taking it for granted that we all have a middle-aged father’s interest in World War II. C J I was looking forward to this because, you know, Tom Hanks! It was no Band of Brothers or the Pacific. However, it had Austin Butler in it and he is by far on of the worst actors on the planet. I don't know who thought he was the best. The series itself confusing, no character depth or arc. It was flat and I felt nothing for them. It all felt rushed as well. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 06/24/24 Full Review Kevin S I wanted to like this so much more but I feel like the red tails would deserve their own series or at least several more episodes. There was just way too many characters tp focus on and it was a bit more difficult to follow as the season goes on. Nowhere near as good as Band of Brothers or the Pacific Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/19/24 Full Review Stephen H Not quite as good as Band of Brothers or The Pacific, but still really good. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/19/24 Full Review Kevin M Can't really capture how awful this is ... it views like a major project that ran out of money two thirds of the way through ... 'let's lash together what we've got, lads' ... the narrative is horribly uneven, the characters utterly unmemorable ... the tropes woefully predictable. Band of Brothers is not. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/19/24 Full Review Matt T Awesome to see the bombing campaign get the modern treatment. Overall, very well written with some excellent acting. The action scenes were first class with some minor inaccuracies (WW2 fighters dont fly like Star Wars Tie Fighters!) with some real tension. The series did taper off in the last few episodes though and a couple distracted from the main storyline such as Harry Crosby's affair and the Tuskegee Airmen (had little to do with the 100th BG really). However they are minor gripes really. Really worth watching to understand the hell the bomber crews went through. Tom Hanks really knows how to produce these wonderful series and I sincerely hopes he doesnt hang up his boots and does another. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/19/24 Full Review Des B This show had so much potential.... Over 10 years in the making and the final product doesn't come close to living up the standard set by "Band of Brothers" or "The Pacific". This show is just another symptom of everything wrong with modern day Hollywood.... poor writing and even poorer CGI. Where did supposedly over $250 budget go??? Such a disappointment.
