      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

With performances by father-son duo Kurt and Wyatt Russell that work a charm, Monarch adds a welcome wrinkle to the Godzilla legacy by honing its monstrous scope to a very human level.

Previous James Grebey New York Magazine/Vulture It’s more than a little underwhelming to have an episode teeing up a future plot development that’s ultimately not that interesting, especially when the human drama around it isn’t the best Monarch can do. 2/5 Dec 22, 2023 Full Review Craig Mathieson Sydney Morning Herald While this spin-off series has to accommodate a recent blockbuster revival of Godzilla movies, it does a good job of establishing its own identity. Nov 28, 2023 Full Review Wenlei Ma PerthNow Monarch: Legacy of Monsters prioritises the personal over the grand, to show audiences that the franchise can have dexterity and range. That it does it with as much finesse as it does is unexpected. Talk about defying expectations. Nov 23, 2023 Full Review Donal Lynch Sunday Independent (Ireland) A welcome throwback in this series about two siblings uncovering their family’s links to a secret organisation. Feb 5, 2024 Full Review Pallavi Keswani The Hindu Despite giving in to the tropes of what makes a kaiju watch satisfying, the Apple show expands its canvas to make this a meaningful addition to the MonsterVerse franchise. Jan 19, 2024 Full Review Kate Sánchez But Why Tho? A Geek Community Monarch: Legacy of Monsters makes the majority of the shots that it takes. Sometimes, the series buckles under the weight of its massive ensemble, but it ultimately succeeds in expanding the Monsterverse’s lore, Titans, and future. 8/10 Jan 12, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews Next

Previous The basic M Very great show hopefully there's a season 2 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/23/24 Full Review Mike B This is not a fake review. Me and my family rather enjoyed the show. We also knew from the synopsis that the show wasn’t all about the monsters fighting. All in all a great show that we all enjoyed. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/19/24 Full Review Jerry S The series is off to an interesting and good start, but suffers a severe drop in quality halfway through. In the finale of the first season, however, the curve goes up again steeply. The attention was relatively limited, aside from sometimes feeling like you were watching a teen drama series. All in all, I would welcome a second season. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/24 Full Review Evwon K Definitely feels like a teen show. Doesn't feel very serious, kinda hallow with exaggerated acting. Has many "New Age" tropes which are 😐. The main issue are some of the characters, they are so incredibly annoying. Its a little of the acting but mainly the writing's fault. The story is also very weak, characters will do weird stuff. The shows does finally get interesting in the end last two episodes. If they keep that up in the second season it might actually be watchable, but my guess they will meander again for most of the season. Wouldn't recommend it to a friend. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/17/24 Full Review James L Despite a few minor nitpicks, overall, this show more than delivered. Everything came together in the awesome finale. If you like Godzilla, this show is required viewing (& not at all tedious - it’s a slow burn, but worth the inferno it delivers if you stick with it to the end). Flashbacks era’s story is stronger than 2015’s, but by the end, they blend sublimely. Hope (& look forward to) a 2nd season. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/16/24 Full Review Andrew S The best thing about this show was its originality. This is not a retread of ideas I've seen in previous shows or movies. It teased ideas about why there would be these monsters and where they come from and I suspect that they can grow it into something that's plausible in science fiction terms. The shadowy government organization is grounded and human. The characters behave like real people, not like all-knowing super geniuses or invincible heroes. In other words, they avoided the problems that ruin so many shows and movies. I enjoyed it instead of begrudgingly finishing it just because I started it. I hope there's a season two.
