What to Know

Critics Consensus

With performances by father-son duo Kurt and Wyatt Russell that work a charm, Monarch adds a welcome wrinkle to the Godzilla legacy by honing its monstrous scope to a very human level.

All the interpersonal stuff seems rather… well, small compared to the existence of walking, dinosaur-shaped atomic bombs. Go to Full Review

It’s more than a little underwhelming to have an episode teeing up a future plot development that’s ultimately not that interesting, especially when the human drama around it isn’t the best Monarch can do. Go to Full Review

While this spin-off series has to accommodate a recent blockbuster revival of Godzilla movies, it does a good job of establishing its own identity. Go to Full Review

Honestly, this show is unpredictable in so many ways, not always in good ways, but it keeps you guessing and really keeps you wanting more. Go to Full Review

Monarch uses its two timelines to fill the screen with more: more music, more plot, and more characters. Very little of it is good. Go to Full Review

I wish this was two separate seasons. I really do. Because now, instead of one fantastic Godzilla show and one middling to decent one, we have a series that comes to life only long enough to frustrate the audience. Go to Full Review

Troy R @Grim16 23h Acting/Writing was tough. The main characters are all very annoying with the way they act so dramatic and illogical. Of course like every show these days there has to be some gay romance that's awkward and forced as hell. Like normally I just comment on how its a trope these days, but this one felt extraordinarily forced, so much it became a joke. The show is very formulaic, every episode they literally do 50 minutes of story and then at the last 5 minutes you get 1 monster showing up and often not doing much. I know the show isn't going to just be Godzilla fighting monsters for 60 minutes, but the 2 fights that happen were underwhelming and short. Shame is that the story about the past stuff is interesting and I like the characters, but that's often only flash backs that end quickly. Not super thrilled for season 2, but ill probably watch just for the 10-15 minutes of interesting monster lore/fighting, everything else in the show is pretty forget-ably bad. See more Chris S @Shotty206 6d This show had potential (interesting premise and some great visuals) but the terrible writing ruined it for me. Some of the cringiest, most melodramatic dialogue I’ve ever heard coupled with silly and nonsensical decisions by the characters. My eyes are sore from rolling so much. All that said, I’m a little bit hooked and might swallow my pride and watch the rest of the series. See more Damon N @Drafty Jan 18 Story was unpredictable and not in a good way, the younger characters were bitchy, annoying, and often very useless. The storyline set in the 1950s was much more interesting. See more Dev H @Devki_1989 Jan 15 This Series is good watch for Godzilla movie fans. Series is basically about the Monarch group who is fighting Titans from years so they show how they fought with them during 1950's and how they are fighting in 2015. Kurt and Wyatt Russel are brilliant in this series and they acted brilliantly. Anna, Kiersey, Ren and Mari play important role and give good support to russell. At the end this series is worth watching and can't wait for next season. See more Phil A. @pjajr47 Dec 20 Slow at points, but it’s a great new age of a classic story. I grew up watching hung creature double feature on Sundays with my Dad. Definitely not the same, but bring a back the nostalgia. Looking forward to season 2 See more Virgil F @virgil-scherbentanz Dec 19 Definitely stunning to see a MonsterVerse series with a gripping plot. Not perfect but none of the MonsterVerse movies are. Had to binge it 💪 See more Read all reviews
