What to Know

Critics Consensus

With performances by father-son duo Kurt and Wyatt Russell that work a charm, Monarch adds a welcome wrinkle to the Godzilla legacy by honing its monstrous scope to a very human level.

A.A. Dowd Primetimer All the interpersonal stuff seems rather… well, small compared to the existence of walking, dinosaur-shaped atomic bombs. Feb 28, 2024 Full Review James Grebey New York Magazine/Vulture It’s more than a little underwhelming to have an episode teeing up a future plot development that’s ultimately not that interesting, especially when the human drama around it isn’t the best Monarch can do. Rated: 2/5 Dec 22, 2023 Full Review Craig Mathieson Sydney Morning Herald While this spin-off series has to accommodate a recent blockbuster revival of Godzilla movies, it does a good job of establishing its own identity. Nov 28, 2023 Full Review Louis Skye (Ronita Roy Mohan) Stereo Geeks (Podcast) Honestly, this show is unpredictable in so many ways, not always in good ways, but it keeps you guessing and really keeps you wanting more. Aug 9, 2025 Full Review Joe George Wealth of Geeks Monarch uses its two timelines to fill the screen with more: more music, more plot, and more characters. Very little of it is good. Rated: 5/10 Jul 20, 2024 Full Review Joonatan Itkonen Toisto.net I wish this was two separate seasons. I really do. Because now, instead of one fantastic Godzilla show and one middling to decent one, we have a series that comes to life only long enough to frustrate the audience. Nikolaos T A Missed Opportunity in the Monsterverse As a longtime fan of the Godzilla franchise and the broader Monsterverse, I approached *Monarch: Legacy of Monsters* with genuine excitement. The premise—exploring the secretive Monarch organization across generations—had the potential to deepen the lore and deliver thrilling Titan encounters. Unfortunately, the show veers away from what many viewers likely came for: the monsters. 🎭 Character-Driven, But at What Cost? The series centers heavily on Cate Randa (played by Anna Sawai), whose personal journey and family mystery drive much of the narrative. While it's commendable to build strong female leads, the execution here feels unbalanced. Male characters often come across as passive or sidelined, and the dynamic occasionally leans into a narrative that diminishes their complexity rather than elevating everyone equally. A more nuanced ensemble approach could have enriched the story and avoided the impression of one-dimensional gender dynamics. 🐲 Where Are the Titans? Despite being set in a world where monsters like Godzilla exist, their presence is surprisingly minimal. The show teases Titan lore and occasionally delivers impressive CGI sequences, but these moments are few and far between. For a series marketed as part of the Monsterverse, the lack of monster action makes it feel more like a family drama with sci-fi elements than a true kaiju epic. 🧭 Final Thoughts *Monarch* had all the ingredients for greatness: a rich universe, compelling mystery, and a stellar cast including Kurt and Wyatt Russell. But by prioritizing character arcs over creature spectacle—and by leaning too heavily into a single character's perspective—it misses the balance that fans of the genre crave. I hope future seasons recalibrate the focus, giving Titans the spotlight they deserve while continuing to develop characters in a way that feels inclusive and multidimensional. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/10/25 Full Review Freddy C Adorei os monstros muito bem feitos. A história foi muito bem contada com tramas medianas e algumas boas. A transição entre presente e passado é excelente e as surpresas realmente surpreendente. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/27/25 Full Review Albert S Enjoyable series. Great vfx and great plot. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/26/25 Full Review Stephen C 10 successful episodes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/20/25 Full Review Ryan N I really enjoyed this series. It does have some slow and boring parts, but overall it is great. I wish it would have more titans. I loved the appearance of Godzilla here and there (I understand they dont have the budget as a movie but hope season will have more of Godzilla and other titans). I loved the every last moment of season 1 at the end of episode 10 (I won't spoil it) but it was great. Kurt Russell and his son Wyatt were great. I have been a big fan of Kurt Russell ever since I saw Big trouble in little China (when I was a kid). The only thing I hope season 2 will have a lot more action and titans. But I loved how monarch rose over the years! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/25/25 Full Review Dark S Have been almost avoiding the show until today as I thought I wouldn't be interested, but after finding out season 2 has been completed, I thought I should try it just in case. I'm now 3 episodes in and hooked. The way they are weaving the story together, and the quality of the locations, acting and cgi are excellent imo.
