Matthew Creith TheWrap “Monster: The Ed Gein Story” strives to tell this monster’s story, but fails to deliver eight episodes worthy of a binge watch. Fantastic performances are diluted with exaggerated B-stories that go nowhere at a slow pace. Oct 9, 2025 Full Review Judy Berman TIME Magazine A show that hates itself. Oct 7, 2025 Full Review Ben Travers IndieWire While bluntly, artlessly realized, the argument that “Monster” makes is clear: These iconic horror movies, as well as the culture they helped create, connect back to Ed Gein. Rated: D- Oct 6, 2025 Full Review Joel Harley Starburst It’s an alarming take on the true crime biopic, and one which throws everyone under the bus, from Gein’s victims to the filmmakers he allegedly inspired. In the end, Monster: The Ed Gein Story is insulting to just about everybody except Ed Gein himself. Rated: 2/5 Oct 14, 2025 Full Review Isabella Cantillano-Sanchez InBetweenDrafts Something so artless deserves no analysis. Let dead things lie. Rated: 0/10 Oct 14, 2025 Full Review Melissa Camacho Common Sense Media Watching "Monster: The Ed Gein Story" can be an overwhelming experience, and many viewers will find it too difficult or disturbing. Rene S Did the critics who panned it even watch the show? It was very well done! Loved the throwbacks to Hitchcock/psycho and Texas chainsaw massacre. Ryan Murphy had his own style and it’s better than 90% of the drivel out there. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/20/25 Full Review Mich W The visuals are great, and the cast’s acting skills are amazing. I like how this series combines actual events and their influence on pop culture. In addition, some of the early plots alternate between reality and imagination, giving the audience a glimpse into the frantic and messy mindset of a person suffering from mental illness. However, the pacing of the plot is sometimes too slow. In addition, this series romanticizes the serial murderer and praises his so-called “accomplishments” by portraying him as a god-like figure in the last few episodes, which kind of ruins the whole series. From my understanding, there is no evidence that Ed Gein helped with capturing Ted Bundy, and thus I do not understand the purpose of adding this plot to the series or idealizing him. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/20/25 Full Review Derek S Started off ok I guess, then quickly went to plain bad. Why make up so much garbage and add is the Texas Chainsaw scene..... just really bad. Sorry I wasted my time. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/20/25 Full Review Spike J Very good show. Dark, disturbing, suspenseful. People that rate this low don't know true horror and psychological thrillers. I would say for fans like myself that like a sick good time with a decent happy ending this is the show for you. This show does not deserve 1 star but 5 only people with no stomach or good taste rates this 1 star Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/20/25 Full Review Andrew C Overall, I really enjoyed this show. As someone who enjoys film, particularly horror genre, it’s fascinating how this show reveals the impact Gein has had on pop culture. The issue becomes, what is real and what is fiction? For anyone wanting the story of Ed Gein, they will be disappointed in the fact that this show does take plenty of liberty with his story, but that could also be in part because of how his story was taken to influence certain storylines and movies. I can also see it being equally frustrating when the show does get certain details correct but then embellishes others, such as his taking part in nexrophelia or his relationship with Watkins as his accomplice. The acting is superb and the set design is great. While I don’t think this is what most fans are expecting, it was still an interesting show that made me want to learn more about the story of Gein. That said, future installments of Monster should probably go back to focusing on the actual story of the person whose story they are telling and if anyone else wants to take a swing at focusing on telling the story of Gein there is an opportunity to do so that many people would probably enjoy more than this telling did. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/20/25 Full Review Joanna S It’s alright. Very sensationalised and a lot of fiction woven in. Which as a true crime fan can be a bit jarring if you know your stuff. Charlie Hunam is great, once you get used to the voice he decided to go with for ed (which although not accurate - does work). I can see why a lot of people are giving it hate but if you think of is as more of an inspired by ed gein rather than a true biopic it makes for alright tv. I would say weakest of the seasons so far. Feel like we are heading down AHS territory where it does become a bit of style over substance. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/20/25 Full Review Read all reviews
