What to Know

Critics Consensus

Alexander Skarsgård's superbly dry wit brings a lot of heart to Murderbot, making for a refreshingly jaunty sci-fi saga about finally coming out of one's shell.

Wenlei Ma The Nightly (AU) If androids can dream of electric sheep then cyborgs can certainly have repressed PTSD. May 27, 2025 Full Review Kevin Slane Boston Globe Ultimately, “Murderbot” is a flawed show with a few laughs and a good heart that will appeal to a very specific subset of viewers. May 22, 2025 Full Review J. Kelly Nestruck Globe and Mail If it weren’t my job to watch television, I would have stopped after a few episodes and missed out on the discovery that the series finds actual laughs and rewards emotional investment in all its characters later on. May 20, 2025 Full Review Steve Murray ArtsATL There are rich existential questions -- about identity, self-will and what it means to be human -- buried deep in its premise. But Murderbot is too busy being deadpan to excavate them. Jul 3, 2025 Full Review Tori Preston Pajiba It’s unique in every aspect, from its blend of sci-fi and humor to its iconic, apathetic narrator, and we can add its release structure to the mix, too. “New and Improved Quibi” wasn’t a rollout strategy I expected or wanted, frankly, but it works. Jun 4, 2025 Full Review Chris Joyce Movies and Munchies (YouTube) I had a lot of fun with this, I think the story, while engaging enough to keep me hooked, could have benefited from longer episodes, allowing even more development and depth on the burgeoning relationships between Murderbot and those he serves. Penny S Read the books? You will enjoy this slightly revised telling, but the heart and Murderbot attitude is RIGHT ON! Haven’t read the books? Enjoy a snarky Murderbot tude, and know that Murderbot says what you are thinking, but no you are not supposed to Also Rise and Fall of Sancuary Moon— a show isn a show is even BETTER than the books - they made it so fun and relevant to the main story Also, can I be a me ever of the Preservation Alliance team at Comi-Con?? LOL Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/05/25 Full Review Vivian M Unfortunately, the quality of the series declines with every episode. While Episode 1 started off with promise, Episode 2 already showed a significant drop. The character dialogues are dull and feel artificial – almost as if they were generated by a chatbot. Overall, the series appears to have been sacrificed to ideological agendas. In the German dub, “Murderborg” is incorrectly referred to as female (“she”), and the excessive use of gendered language makes the viewing experience unbearable for me ... Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/04/25 Full Review s m Really not what I was expecting from this show, but very pleasantly surprised Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/04/25 Full Review Saydeé L There’s not enough people talking about how good Murderbot is! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/04/25 Full Review sam c Most of the time I see that audience reviews tend to not match critic's reviews, often when critic reviews are high. And most of the time I think the audience is correct. However, I am really surprised that this has not been more highly rated. I think it is hilarious. With each episode, I have enjoyed it more. I laugh right out loud. Alex Skarsgaard (spelling?) is pretty great as murderbot. He is sort of a petulant teen. The group is this granola kind of hippy like thinkers that are good hearted but make your eyes roll. Watching how they have to navigate a dangerous situation as well as their relationship to murderbot with their morals intact is fun and interesting. And seeing murderbot. who doesn't think much of humans (can't blame him), become more endeared to his clients is sweet and funny. His obsession with his shlocky version of a bad Star Trek show is hilarious. My biggest complaint is that it really should have been longer than 30min. I am so disappointed when it ends. The episode flies by just as things just start to happen. I am not being that coherent in this review but I am enjoying this show so much. There have not been very many comedies that make me laugh. The other apple shows like the studio is so trite and rarely funny whose 30min drags every episode. I hope more people check this out. I compare this to Loot in that I think it is under appreciated. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/04/25 Full Review K G This show is absolutely garbage....I get more and more ANNOYED after every pointless "mini"-episode. The acting is awful, the storyline and weak and pointless. I'd rather watch The Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon. Two thumbs and all ten toes DOWN.
