The Academy Awards — 97th Oscars

What to Know

Critics Consensus

The 97th Oscars won't win any awards for brevity, but it earns kudos for a genuinely celebratory mood and the comedic stylings of fresh-faced new kid on the block, Conan O'Brien.

Judy Berman TIME Magazine The best moments of this hosting gig were just Conan being Conan, letting the winners enjoy their spotlight and laughing at himself to make everyone else feel comfortable. Mar 5, 2025 Full Review Coleman Spilde Salon.com The show was so desperately trying to meet the world at the moment it's in, but it took the winners to give this year’s Oscar ceremony a point. Mar 4, 2025 Full Review Richard Brody The New Yorker Like the franchise films and crowd-pleasing I.P. that the Academy largely spurns, the show is a big-budget production so gaudy and overblown, so calculating in its precise doses of emotion and glamour, that it is by now borderline unwatchable. Mar 4, 2025 Full Review Kevin Fallon The Daily Beast The Oscars seemed to know it had a moment to meet. It just didn’t seem to know which moment that was, where it was, or how to find it. The result was a telecast that seemed, as that sentence would suggest, completely lost. Jun 10, 2025 Full Review Matt Roush TV Insider The impulse to add entertainment value to the show is understandable, but this year it just made a long night even longer. Mar 5, 2025 Full Review Michael Clark Epoch Times Conan O’Brien did something I didn’t think was possible: he made the Oscars fun again. In his first outing as host, in front of the largest worldwide audience he’ll ever have, he was in peak form, and much could be said about the rest of the broadcast. Sang P I only watched it for Conan! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/11/25 Full Review Alex M NO Oscars for me EVER Again!! Is a JOKE. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/09/25 Full Review V K this is cringe. anora, this sh.t? wtf? oscar is a complete scam and a joke... The last Oscar I watched… Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/08/25 Full Review Jonathan O Conan O'Brian is the best oscar host! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/08/25 Full Review Audience Member The intro where they used The Substance and Conan crawled out of Demi was actually kinda funny. But the rest of the show was pretty mid. It seemed like each pair of announcers never knew where to go on stage like they didn't even rehearse at all. That kind of sloppiness makes the show cheap. I had watched most of the movies that were nominated and I was pretty surprised that a movie about a stripper/escort with lots of partying and sex scenes won best picture and best lead actress. This made it pretty clear that the award shows are somewhat rigged. Anora is like a streaming movie at best. If Anora was the best movie that Hollywood could come out with, the industry is in trouble. I saw Wicked in the theater and even though I've seen the Broadway play a million times, I thought it should have won best picture based on the quality of acting, singing, dancing and pure production. Maybe the Academy is just tired of old stories and enjoyed Mikey Madison butt naked and getting railed throughout Anora. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/08/25 Full Review andrew k So boring. Conan just not funny. Acceptance speeches pathetic. Thank goodness for fast forward . So many great films that never get nominated. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/07/25 Full Review Read all reviews
