What to Know

Critics Consensus

Emphasizing spycraft's heavy toll to both intriguing and tiresome effect, The Agency situates its all-star cast in a sumptuously-shot world of espionage.

Graeme Blundell The Australian …The show is impeccably controlled in its tone, meditative almost, but gripping as various plots are outlined that will obviously continue to be developed in the same fashion as The Bureau unfolded. Jan 3, 2025 Full Review Craig Mathieson The Age (Australia) The considered pacing, and labyrinthine storytelling, feel apt. This is a show that knows what it is building to, over this season and future ones. Rated: 4/5 Dec 13, 2024 Full Review Dan Einav Financial Times The show offers intrigue but it lacks energy. Rated: 3/5 Dec 9, 2024 Full Review Dónal Lynch Sunday Independent (Ireland) The episodes seem far too long, and large swathes of screentime feel like treading water; it's as slow as molasses. Jan 3, 2025 Full Review Tom Gliatto People Magazine You get the urgency of world events, secret bedroom adventures and-oh!-that Fassbender, with his firm mouth, noble profile and burning gaze. Dec 20, 2024 Full Review Susan Granger SSG Syndicate Cliched, stagnant and frustrating this wannabe spy series, adapted from its French counterpart, boasts big-name studs involved in undercover espionage but adds up to very little. Jane R It starts slow but it is slick and gets thrilling fast. Great acting by star-studded cast. Only annoying thing is the title music, so whiny and over the top, beyond annoying. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/13/25 Full Review Matthew S This is a solid spy series. It is unique in that is doesn't follow the same path as many other series in the same genre. This series has something special about it; not Homeland special, but special. The acting is very good and the writing, although lacking slightly at times, is quick to recover and grip the viewer again. This is a series worth watching and one that surely will require another season. A slow burn at times, but it leaves enough meat on the bone to keep the viewer interested. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/12/25 Full Review Anthony W This series trades relentless action for a nuanced, grounded portrayal of the complexities of espionage. Think John le Carré’s Smiley rather than Jason Bourne. It leans into cerebral storytelling and the moral ambiguity of geopolitics. The dialogue is sharp and intelligent, demanding the audience’s attention, while the plot is meticulous, reflecting the slow-burn nature of real-world intelligence work. This isn’t a show for those seeking high-octane thrills or explosions at every turn. Instead, it will resonate deeply with viewers who appreciate layered characters, intricate power dynamics, and the understated tension of behind-the-scenes manoeuvring. Agency delivers in spades. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/12/25 Full Review Marcia B This visually stunning series gets high marks for staging and intrigue. I question, though, how a newly returned NOC gets to function nearly autonomously among the CIA station's top-tier officers. And what the heck happened to Frank, Martian's adversary in the front office, who featured so prominently in the first episodes? He just - poof! - disappeared. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/25 Full Review Omite I This is not your flashy cliche spy storyline. Agency explored the complexities and intersections between agencies, I Love the personal storylines balancing that of espionage. Must watch Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/12/25 Full Review Tony C AMAZING SHOW. The critics are too dumb to appreciate it apparently. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/25 Full Review Read all reviews
