Created by George Pelecanos and David Simon, who also collaborated on HBO's "The Wire" and "Treme," the semifictional drama series "The Deuce" tells of the germination of the sex-trade industry in the heart of New York's Times Square. It's the early 1970s, and the porn business begins a shift from organized crime-backed parlors to a legitimate, culturally accepted enterprise. A cast of barkeeps, prostitutes, pimps, police and nightlife seekers centers around twins Vincent and Frankie Martino (James Franco, in a dual role), who navigate the sex business after meeting well-connected mobster Rudy Pipilo. Their storyline, among others, merges with that of prostitute Candy, whose ambition and intelligence lead her to a more prominent role in the industry. Read More Read Less

Matthew Gilbert Boston Globe Maggie Gyllenhaal, as an ambitious self-pimping prostitute who goes by the name Candy, is altogether excellent. Dec 13, 2018 Full Review Rebecca Nicholson Guardian None of it bodes well for the long-term future of the Life, as it is known, but it makes for very good drama indeed. Rated: 4/5 Dec 13, 2018 Full Review Matt Zoller Seitz New York Magazine/Vulture They're more comfortably settled than in season one, which tends to happen when you aren't looking over your shoulder every second. Their minds are abuzz with schemes to evolve. The show evolves with them. Dec 13, 2018 Full Review Taylor Baker Drink in the Movies Episode 13: Raison D'être Rated: 85/100 Sep 1, 2021 Full Review Susan Kemp Consequence Maybe more powerfully than any show on air, it shows the futility so many women face when their ambitions get stalled by Harvey Weinstein-esque gatekeepers. Dec 13, 2018 Full Review Marc Muñoz El Pais (Spain) 'The Deuce' expands its value with a second season that shines the signs with which David Simon distinguishes his creations. Gareth v The second season improves on an excellent debut season by developing the arc of the key characters, particularly those of it's female leads. Must see TV. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/28/23 Full Review Doug B Watched S1 when it aired and never finished. Love this perspective of NYC. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review jack z Season 2 has a noticeably different focus than the first, and that's what makes it fundamentally not as good, and at times a bit stodgy due to a sloppy first few episodes. However, I can't help but remain invested in these characters and the grimly anecdotal moments of their lives, and the '70s NYC representation has never been recreated this perfectly. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member The best of my life thank you Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member I think this show is underrated by those who turned it off because of the subject matter. They missed out on great character driven stories. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews
