Tony Soprano juggles the problems of his fractious family with those of a "Family" of a different sort - the mob. He sees a therapist to deal with his professional and personal problems, which bring on panic attacks. He deals with personal and professional power struggles, affairs, violence, the threat of exposure and betrayal, and a whole bunch of people being whacked.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

America's first crime family bows out in a chilling cut to black during a meditative final season that is debatably cruel to audience expectations but wholly committed to its thematic integrity.

Alison Herman The Ringer The Sopranos came up with an ending just as murky and disorienting as the 85 hours that led up to it. Rather than betray its ethos by bowing to convention, The Sopranos went out on its own terms. Jun 21, 2018 Full Review Matthew Gilbert Boston Globe Rather than an ending that would stop the conversation about Tony Soprano, Chase gave us an ending that will keep us talking. Jun 21, 2018 Full Review Jonah Weiner The New Yorker Chase isn't the only auteur to turn an audience's bloodlust against itself, but unlike, say, Michael Haneke or Quentin Tarantino, he chose an unnervingly quiet way to leave us on the hook, in perpetuity. Jun 21, 2018 Full Review Tony Black Cultural Conversation A show about everything, that meant something, that adds up to no specific conclusion, or realisation, or point of clarity. The wheel turns. The American Nightmare continues. Rated: 5/5 Jan 31, 2021 Full Review Daniel Krauze El Financiero The Sopranos is written with psychological depth and made with creative freedom. The result is personal, but not impenetrable or surly. [Full review in Spanish] Sep 21, 2018 Full Review Tim Goodman San Francisco Examiner Who knows? We'll never know. And it's better that way. If you're thinking there's a movie in the works, think again. It was supposed to end like this. Jun 21, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews

Rajesh K I went into The Sopranos expecting a lot, but it just didn't deliver. The pacing was all over the place, and I felt like I was stuck in a never-ending cycle of wasted potential except for season 2&3. The pacing was slow and plodding, particularly from Season 4 onwards. New characters were introduced without resolving existing storylines, leaving me feeling frustrated and disconnected. The family dynamics were a good overview but they letdown at character development, especially A.J.'s storyline - what a waste of potential! But, gotta give credit where credit's due, Junior Soprano's character was actually pretty great. Dominic Chianese nailed it! While I acknowledge The Sopranos' influence on the TV drama landscape, I firmly believe its impact is overstated. For me, the show's reputation far exceeds its actual quality. It was a promised slow-burn which never ignites. If you're thinking of watching it, just be aware that it's a bit of a slog. Idk it might be the generational gap even. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/14/24 Full Review Ron M I loved this show. But in the end, Tony's ma was right. It ended up being a big nothing after all Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/27/24 Full Review Jan V Finally "binged" the whole Sopranos series, and I have to say it was a bit disappointing. Doesn't hold a candle to series like The Wire, Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy or The Shield. Maybe that is because I didn't watch it in 1999, but in 2024, and television has evolved (or devolved). I really enjoyed season 3 and 4, but everything else was just "meh". And the finale was one big let down. Overrated. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/02/24 Full Review Thomas Alonzo C 10 de 10 obra maestra Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/29/24 Full Review Eli B Realistically the whole second part of season 6 as a whole was isnt a 0.5 but the time I got here I was just rushing to get the show over with. I didn't like any of the charcaters by the end of the show and the ending felt rushed so many plot lines forgotten about. Many of the charcaters didn't have a complete arc, and the ending itself....endings of shows movies are important for me. It was unexciting. It brings the whole show down. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/03/24 Full Review Katie B The ending threw me off at first but after I thought about it, it's honestly genius. Absolutely loved this show!
