Critics Consensus

We Were Liars might be Succession-lite, but its juicy family dynamics mixed with psychological intrigue will leave viewers amply satisfied and quietly shattered.

References to King Lear and fairytales are laid on thick. At least it’s pleasant to look at, like a Duchess of Sussex moodboard come to life. Go to Full Review
Angie Han The Hollywood Reporter Jun 18
In such a vast sea of stories about miserable rich white people, it’s hard to feel moved by the glacially paced awakening of one pampered princess coming to realize, at the big age of 16, that there might be more to life than partying. Go to Full Review

A twisted and compelling series about family, entitlement and consequences. Though the final two episodes aren’t as powerful as they could have been, the show is still worth the ride. Go to Full Review

Don’t expect groundbreaking drama –We Were Liars is far from a teen Big Little Lies. But if you want to enjoy rich mansion property porn, something pulpy to switch your brain off to, and a juicy mystery, then We Were Liars may be the perfect summer watch. Go to Full Review

For all its visual appeal and hints at deeper themes, the series doesn't quite hold up under closer scrutiny. Go to Full Review

This soapy teen series is a fun summer diversion, but it doesn't bring much new to the table aside from a wild ending twist. Go to Full Review

Miki T @Mikimightmineme 6d Yes, my midnight adrenaline made me binge watch in one night, and I liked it. I was weeping at 6:30 AM. I really want to stop this habit. So in the way, I’d like to ask them to stop making these soapy shows which I like. See more Courtney O Oct 4 What I thought would be another big budget drama turned out to be a captivating story with a wildly unexpected twist. A poignant commentary on wealth, privilege, and the turning point that comes with age - when you start to question the world around you and struggle to navigate the complexities of life. While the story development in the middle of the series felt a little slower, it was also hard to tell if it was in fact the pace or my desperate want to find out what happened that was driving my impatience. The twist in the last few episodes, however, left me incredibly emotional and physically shaken. Would definitely recommend and looking forward to what season 2 holds. See more Raquel E @raquelea Oct 2 A haunting and atmospheric story that works best as a character study of privilege, grief, and family secrets. The writing style is lyrical and at times overly dramatic, but it adds to the disorienting mood of the narrative. The twist is powerful, even if the buildup feels repetitive, and it lingers because of the emotional fallout rather than the mechanics of the mystery. Beautiful in parts, frustrating in others, but memorable overall. See more Paola A @Meowmeowmeow Oct 1 The family is boring and have no life. So they keep arguing about small things. The Plot twist, the secrets that were lie about is too petty. The intro is more interesting than the story of the liars. See more Robert P @randallstephens Sep 12 Unlike many shows, this actually gets better after the first episode. Some fun twists, decent writing and performances, and good (though not particularly subtle) comments on class. Slows down in the second half—last four episodes should have been two. Unfortunately this weakens the finale, but still worth the watch. See more Hail R Aug 26 This is an absolute watch!! See more Read all reviews
