Critics Consensus

We Were Liars might be Succession-lite, but its juicy family dynamics mixed with psychological intrigue will leave viewers amply satisfied and quietly shattered.

Anita Singh Daily Telegraph (UK) References to King Lear and fairytales are laid on thick. At least it’s pleasant to look at, like a Duchess of Sussex moodboard come to life. Rated: 2/5 Jun 25, 2025 Full Review Angie Han The Hollywood Reporter In such a vast sea of stories about miserable rich white people, it’s hard to feel moved by the glacially paced awakening of one pampered princess coming to realize, at the big age of 16, that there might be more to life than partying. Jun 18, 2025 Full Review Aramide Tinubu Variety A twisted and compelling series about family, entitlement and consequences. Though the final two episodes aren’t as powerful as they could have been, the show is still worth the ride. Jun 18, 2025 Full Review Tatat Bunnag Bangkok Post For all its visual appeal and hints at deeper themes, the series doesn't quite hold up under closer scrutiny. Jul 9, 2025 Full Review Polly Conway Common Sense Media This soapy teen series is a fun summer diversion, but it doesn't bring much new to the table aside from a wild ending twist. Jun 30, 2025 Full Review Mini Anthikad-Chhibber The Hindu Dreadful writing, zero chemistry between the leads, a plot twist that comes too late and animal cruelty effectively bury this adaptation of E. Matt M My wife has been watching this. From what I've seen, it might be the lamest, worst written show I've ever seen. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/14/25 Full Review Matthew B Bit heavy handed, but rich with humanity, drama, romance, pleasing aesthetics and escapism. Excellent summer viewing. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/14/25 Full Review BRizz 2 We Were Liars — currently streaming — is a limited series (or perhaps the first of more to come), and after finishing all eight episodes, I have mixed feelings. First, let’s start with the cast. Overall, the casting was well done. Most of the characters felt believable and well-placed in their roles. One of the mothers initially felt a little off, as if she didn’t quite fit the tone or mold of the family dynamic being built—but over time, her presence grew more relevant. By the later episodes, her character became better integrated, which helped smooth out that early disconnect. The direction was engaging in the sense that it kept raising questions, keeping the mystery alive from episode to episode. However, where it fell short was in pacing the answers. We were left in the dark for far too long—questions raised in episode one still lingered through episode seven. Everything was dumped into the final episode, which made the journey feel unnecessarily drawn out. A more balanced reveal structure would’ve made each episode more rewarding and rewatchable. To be honest, episodes one through seven were entertaining, but I wouldn’t rewatch them—because without context, they’re too confusing. Episode eight, however, was incredibly well done. It’s the only episode I’d consider rewatching, as it finally gives the clarity and emotional payoff that the rest of the show lacked. As for performances, Joseph Zada was the breakout star for me. Though technically a side character, his acting was the most believable and emotionally layered in the entire series. You could feel his joy, fear, pain, and everything in between. He easily outshone the lead actress—who was still strong in her role, just not on the same level emotionally. Characters like Gat and Mirren had strong moments, but they didn’t rise above supporting tier, even though the series tried to treat all four of the younger leads equally. Joseph led the pack, followed by Cadence, and then the others. Even the grandfather and grandmother left memorable impressions. Overall, We Were Liars is a solid watch, but the storytelling structure held it back. It’s frustrating when a show keeps you guessing but refuses to give you any real answers until the very end. While it’s emotionally satisfying once it all comes together, the journey there was more excessive than it needed to be. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/13/25 Full Review Zack D. These days I would say it’s rare to have a twist that I didn’t guess at least a portion of. This show had my jaw on the floor when the big reveal came about. Is it a little more teen angst than I would have cared for, sure. But was a great mindless watch with an ending you won’t see coming. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/13/25 Full Review Andrew L Started off with strong potential, and slowly got worse and worse with each episode. The writing felt lazy at times and the ending was just…won’t spoil it but grandpa is maybe the most likable Sinclair by the end of it. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/13/25 Full Review Sheridan C. i really really liked this show, i thought the foreshadowing was amazing Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/12/25 Full Review Read all reviews
