Alexandr Askoldov
Best known for his debut film, "Komissar," adapted from Vassily Grossman's story about a Red Army officer who is billeted with a Jewish family while she has her illegitimate baby. Completed in 1967, the film was banned as "pro-Zionist," secretly preserved by employees of the State Film Archives, and finally shown--after international protest and to widespread critical acclaim--at the 1987 Moscow Film Festival.
