David Greenwalt began his career in entertainment as a producer and screenwriter for romantic comedies in the 1980s. He wrote screenplays for the films "Utilities," "Class," and "American Dreamer" before making his directorial debut in 1985's "Secret Admirer," a film he also wrote. He continued to work as a writer for "Doogie Howser, M.D" and a director for "The Wonder Years" during the early 1990s, which led to more production and writing credits on the offbeat crime series "The Commish." He served as the show's producer from 1993 to 1995 and continued to produce television series like "The X-Files" and "Profit" throughout the 1990s. In 1997, he teamed up with television creator and writer Joss Whedon on the teen cult series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." Greenwalt worked as a consulting producer and writer on "Buffy." He also worked on another Whedon production, the "Buffy"-inspired spinoff "Angel." Greenwalt had more writing duties on "Angel"--writing a total of 111 episodes and directing seven. He focused more on the production end of the television business post-2000, serving as an executive producer on and writing for the crime drama "Kidnapped" and the highly-anticipated fantasy series "Grimm." Greenwalt also served as a consulting producer on the crime drama "In Plain Sight."
