László Nemes
Born in Budapest but raised in Paris, director László Nemes was the son of a film director, and his own passion for filmmaking began at an early age, leading him to make amateur horror films in the family's basement. After finishing school in Paris, Nemes began working as an assistant director, hired on projects in France and in Hungary. He assisted Béla Tarr in filming the movie "The Man From London" (2007). After directing his first short in 2006, "With a Little Patience," Nemes relocated to New York City to study as a director. In 2011 he was in Paris on a scholarship program funded by the Cinefondation. While there, Nemes and Clara Royer developed a script for the film that would become "Son of Saul" (2015). The following year at the Jerusalem International Film Lab the two continued to work on the screenplay, developing it further. The film had its premiere at the 68th Cannes Film Festival and won the Grand Prix. In 2016 the movie won both the Golden Globe and the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The film is set in the Auschwitz prison camp and follows the story of a man charged with disposing of the gas chamber victims.
