      Critics Consensus

This remake of Planet of the Apes can't compare to the original in some critics' mind, but the striking visuals and B-movie charms may win you over.

ZuZoup It's pretty solid as a movie, it's entertaining, but not well made at all. The story is decent, but nothing more than decent. It's kind if confusing when you're watching it. I would not recommend it, but some people would definitely love this movie. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 04/09/24 Full Review William H So many distracting detail's starting with their obsession to use numerous reverse quotes from the original. One would be expected but there were too many. Costumes mostly good but errors and defects again are distracting. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/15/24 Full Review Jacob B And I thought his Charlie and the Chocolate Factory remake was terrible. This was the most unbearably lousy remake I've seen, ever! The dialogue was campy and stiff. The acting mediocre at best. The set designs looked staged and blocky. Someone should tell Tim Burton to throw in the towel and stop ruining beloved classics with his re-imagined gothic nightmares. The practical effects and makeup design were the only positive aspect of this comically bland film. Being a satisfactory artist doesn't equate to being a good director. Designing sets is the only job that mascara wearing emo misfit is decent at - not counting this train wreck of course! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/11/24 Full Review Joshua H I liked it, it's a very interesting take on the material where can see a few Tim Burtons in there with the presentation of the Apes themselves. I don't think this was very thought-provoking tho with how they told the story but I can't lie I enjoyed myself. I am annoyed that we had a very interesting twist at the end that doesn't get followed up on but if that means we got the upcoming trilogy we got I'll take the sacrifice 🤣 Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/01/24 Full Review Alec B The make-up is great and I like a lot of the other design elements. Plus that final twist is so psychotic I can't help but appreciate it a little bit. With the exception of that ending everything else in the plot feels like a collage of studio notes so it really doesn't end up saying much of anything. Joshua Rothkopf In These Times No remake would have been deemed complete without a shockaroo ending-and this Apes has its lulu, which I won't disclose-but it leaves behind the stink of arbitrary mystification. Mar 16, 2020 Full Review Nell Minow Common Sense Media Decent re-imagining of the classic. Rated: 4/5 Dec 27, 2010 Full Review Steven D. Rated: C May 9, 2002 Full Review Rob Gonsalves Rob's Movie Vault All about noise and chaos — the unstable mix of intellect and brutal will that’s intended to mirror our own evolution. Rated: B Sep 7, 2022 Full Review Sean Axmaker Stream on Demand These apes rock and rule, but their gymnastic antics dont cover-up a thin script and a plot that feels thrown together, and the so-called twist ending feels more like a bad joke someone in production took way too seriously. Apr 26, 2022 Full Review Leigh Paatsch Herald Sun (Australia) The movie does a great job in its spectacular staging of many pitched battles between humans and their evolutionary ancestors.
