      Critics Consensus

Muddled and lacking the political context of the original, Swept Away offers further proof that Madonna can't act.

helder f Both versions of this movie are a bit contrived. The difference is that in its original form, a divide between capitalism and socialism was more relevant and convincing. In the 2000s version the issue is very forced, with not being very believable that those conversations and those dynamics would be taken to the extremes depicted in the movie. The movie would've worked better if the differences between the passengers and the crew were depicted more subtly and unfolded more organically. Instead the movie, from its inception , forces differences between them that are just not very convincing in that day and age. The Italian sailor who has a sculpted body but doesn't know anything about gyms… does know anything about lawyers, or money. Where was he all his life?! There is a lack of chemistry between the characters, the script is not very convincing. Madonna -often all what people know about the movie- is not especially bad or especially good in comparison with other actors. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/18/24 Full Review Tadek R Loved it! Hilarious movie! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/09/24 Full Review Ciaran S Swept Away completely misses the point of what made its predecessor so perfect (even if i never saw the original). As someone who just recently got used to listening to Madonna this movie feels generic and boring, and as much as I hate to say this that, was Jennifer Lopez right about "The Queen of Pop" being a terrible actress? Well thankfully is probably for the best that Madonna has moved on to just making music cause this is NOT a good example of remaking a timeless classic into something boring. He's the belittled fisherman she continually mistreats... until he turns all abusive when they're stranded on an island. It's a love story! Hard to see how this mess ever could've gone right. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/24/23 Full Review David W Only just got around to seeing this thanks to it being recently resurrected by Netflix. What can I say, thanks a lot Netflix, you should have left this at the bottom of the barrel. The comedy falls flat, there's no chemistry or sexual tension between the leads and I simply didn't care if they got together or frankly even survived. It felt like it was simply a vanity project for a limited actress who only got the part purely thanks to her connection to her then husband. I've nothing at all against Madonna, she's a great pop deva and was fine in Desperately Seeking Susan but she was simply out of her depth in this role. I'm just glad this oven roasted turkey with trimmings didn't kill Guy Ritchie's career, as he's a very talented director whose movies I've largely very much enjoyed before and since. In summary, neither romantic nor comedic, which is terminally bad news for a romantic comedy and a movie all concerned probably wish they could remove from their cv's.
