With wit and athletic genius, with defiant rage and inner grace, Muhammad Ali forever changed the American landscape. Fighting all comers, Ali took on the law, conventions, the status quo and the war -- as well as the fists in front of him. Ali both ignited and mirrored the conflicts of his time and ours to become one of the most admired fighters in the world. Forget, now, what you thought you knew.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Though perhaps no film could fully do justice to the fascinating life and personality of Muhammad Ali, Mann's direction and Smith's performance combine to pack a solid punch.

It has the unsurpassable merit of its main character, Muhammad Ali, who is both one of the most serious people in the world and one of the funniest. Go to Full Review

The director's cut is the best but any version of Michael Mann's film makes it clear: The rope-a-dope was something Ali perfected outside the ring, cobbled together as a combination move inside only after he reconciled himself to his singular status. Go to Full Review

[Michael Mann] successfully recreates an era on screen and provides a great introduction to the fighter that is not clouded by sentimentality. Go to Full Review

Stephen C @bob25009 Nov 17 Based on a true story in 02 hours, 36 minutes, and 43 seconds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ages 17 and older!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In memory of Muhammad Ali!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! See more MR. G Aug 10 WILL SMITH IS ALI !!! So Ali (2001) is a movie that if you think is mostly gonna focus on his boxing life is not while it does focus on some parts of his boxing career like his fight with Liston, Frazier and Foreman is more on Ali political life and his boxing ban and that’s really the movie is more about Ali career ban for like 56 mins and then goes to his Frazier and foreman fight. Will Smith as “the greatest” Muhammad Ali is perfect character for him and he played it well. Other then that film does have is pacing moments but nothing to worry about and it does take some deep dives about Ali’s life. Overall a solid 6.5/10 for the movie. See more Mason H Jun 7 Speechless, it's a masterpiece and one of Will Smith's best performances! Not to mention the stellar and star studded cast with exceptional talent in every scene. See more Daniel N Apr 21 A slow burn but a really good movie. Will Smith is brilliant as Ali See more Francisco S Mar 6 Once again they make a real story boring. I know this is not a documentary, but there is more actual interesting footage from Ali than what is shown in this picture. See more Sams K 09/03/2024 A great cinematic portrait of a legendary athlete, maybe one of best acting performances by Will Smith. See more Read all reviews
