The J
This is a hard one to review. On one hand it has so many good things going for it, but in the end it doesn't really click. So much of the time I have to be honest, i was waiting for it to skip ahead as I was absolutely bored.
I think part of the reason is, unlike so much found footage films, once you get the start of the first encounter, and I won't give it away, but after that the formula for the rest of how the film will go is pretty obvious, and worse, it does exactly that.
So in a film that should really be heavily about 'discovery' there doesn't seem to be any moment you really feel like you are going to be surprised by coming events, as well as being able to easily predict them.
The movie scenes are well done in that for the budget, the cinematography, lighting, sets, vfx, are actually well done, no doubt the acting at times hits far above the budget as well. But because you know the ending before it happens, it's just removes any tension or build up. You know the ending, and there is no 'surprise twist ending', it's just plays exactly as the film foretold in the first minute honestly.
But having said all that, again because so much of this film is well done, I think some people might actually like it a lot, at the same time I can understand both sides of how people might react to this film.
Writing original material is easier said than done, cliche's are such for a reason, they tend to be the strongest structures for most films, so it's no surprise so many films/stories/writters end up in similar setups.
However, if this film had had a real 3rd act, that wasn't predicted from the beginning, I think this woiuld have been a huge success... so close..

I’ve watched this movie multiple times and always come back to it. You can tell it’s pretty low budget, but they did a really good job on the production. Acting isn’t too bad and the plot is great.

A Found Footage Thriller that actually does used it's format into the story very well but it still feels into the generic pitfalls of cliches of the gimmick

Forget the naysayers. If you're just looking for a good scare without too much thought, this movie is a winner.

It had an impressive base material, the lights that for years have been observed in the mountains of North Carolina. It was a terrifying subject, with which great things could be done, full of suspense and terror. An ambitious but well-made project would be a great film about alien abductions. Unfortunately, everything is a good premise and nothing else. The movie is ridiculously cheap in more ways than one. The script is generic and just starting out you know how it's going to end. The performances are bad, the characters are not interesting and you don't care what happens to them. The special and practical effects are ridiculous, there is a particular scene in the film where some birds are used to scare the protagonists, but you can see that they are of poor quality plastic and very cheap. Instead of scaring, it laughs at how bad this looks. It's because of these silly movies that aliens aren't treated with respect in the film industry and horror movie fans have to see this generic crap over and over again. Zero recommended if you are looking to look, seriously, if you want to make fun of a little of the bad film that is, becomes tolerable this garbage.
