What to Know

Critics Consensus

While Sigourney Weaver's feral performance as a resurrected Ripley restores some fun to the Alien franchise, the acid blood running through this fourth entry's veins corrodes whatever emotional investment audiences had left.

David Hunter The Hollywood Reporter Alien Resurrection checks in with enough slime, gore and scary monster-flick moments to satisfy undemanding audiences. But it's an ugly, animated corpse of a movie stitched together from the other three films in the series. Aug 7, 2024 Full Review Jay Carr Boston Globe [A] cold but sufficiently nightmarish and high-powered proof that there's life in the old franchise yet. Aug 7, 2024 Full Review Sandra Hall Sydney Morning Herald The sardonic bits work, but there's none of the old grandeur and depth, and not much horror either. The smell of evil is missing. Aug 7, 2024 Full Review Casey Chong Casey's Movie Mania [A] missed opportunity. Rated: 2.5/5 Aug 15, 2024 Full Review Marshall Fine Journal News (Westchester, NY) Let's see: It's a big improvement over No. 3, not as good as No. 2 but on a par with or slightly better than No. 1. Anything else you want to know about Alien Resurrection? Rated: 3.5/4 Aug 7, 2024 Full Review Bob Stephens San Francisco Examiner A wonderfully contradictory film -- it's trashy, brutal, viciously ironic and highly imaginative. Audience Member Canonically, Ripley can straight up ball! With the Alien series being as diverse as it is, we were due for a campy entry and damn does this film pitch a tent. It keeps with the series tradition of dipping into unique sub-genres, but the quip comedy sub-genre doesn’t really work with the Alien universe. This film introduces some terrifying scenarios involving Xenomorphs and pairs the iconic horror actresses, Sigourney Weaver and Winona Ryder, but so many of its big swings feel like misses. While it marks a continued decline in quality for the series, it still remains an entertaining watch for fans of the series, though in a B horror way this time. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/04/25 Full Review Kevin P While Alien 3 pleasantly surpassed my low expectations, this movie eagerly met the low bar set by its infamous reputation as the worst Alien movie. Despite the big names attached to this project, the acting is terrible all across the board in that obnoxiously smirky camera-mugging 90s kind of way as everyone overacts in such a cartoonish way that clashes with the sci-fi horror tone. The only exception to this is Sigourney Weaver, but she has the opposite problem where she under-acts to everything and it leaves a movie with no one to care about. Brad Dourif oddly enough was the only entertaining performance in the whole thing. The dialogue is really cheesy and there are so many nonsensical and shark-jumping moments and concepts that this movie bombards you with. Especially the half-assed baby human-alien hybrid at the end, which is neither cute enough for sympathy or evil enough for gratification when it perishes. Even the soundtrack is obnoxiously bombastic and feels out of place with the grimy horror setting. The only saving graces are some of the visual set designs, Sigourney Weaver’s impressive backwards basketball shot, and the admittedly tense underwater chase sequence. It’s not the most infuriating shark-jumping franchise sequel I’ve seen (cough, cough 2018 predator), but it’s easily one of the most baffling and poorly executed jumbled messes I’ve seen in a while. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/25 Full Review babarizam D I changed my opinion about this movie after 20 years. I think no matter how weak we think story line is, it keeps one thing which was continuation. The dots from Alien til this movie connects pretty well. However, Prequels has big issues in my opinion. Ridley Scott should have never gone back to the franchise. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/26/25 Full Review Topher S "you got your clone in my alien!" "you got your alien in my clone!" Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/25/25 Full Review Julie C I don't understand why this movie gets so much hate. Considering what the director was left with after Alien 3, I think he did a pretty good job. The movie has a distinct visual style which perhaps clashes with the grim tone of the series, but is still beautifully shot. Sigourney Weaver delivers a fascinating, otherworldly take on the character, and while the ragtag crew of mercenaries might feel a bit cartoonish for fans of Ridley Scott’s atmospheric horror (Alien) or James Cameron’s intense action-thriller (Aliens), this movie still gives an interesting and entertaining package. Alien: Resurrection offers a visually stunning and imaginative take on the franchise and, in my opinion, doesn't deserve the level of disdain it received.
