      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Alien Resurrection marks a slight improvement over its predecessor, but still lacks the emotional stakes that helped make the franchise's first two entries sci-fi/horror classics.

Gorptholemew T 🍀 4.8/10 I actually knew a guy who was just like the surgeon in here he really wanted to fuck the Xenomorphs. I love the cast here everybody does a really good job it's also really cool to see Winona Ryder in here. I feel like she's one of those actors where you don't see her very often but once you do she always has a nice presence. Although I feel as if this movie is a little stretched out like the pacing is OK, but there's certain things that are a bit dragged on which I guess is just expected from films like this (jurassic Park sequels) cough, cough. And then that's some pretty good sequences, but very unneeded sequel but compared to aliens three this is Citizen Kane. Grade C+ Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/16/24 Full Review g j A much maligned and widely misunderstood piece of cinema that perhaps deservedly (maybe even intentionally) rubbed people the wrong way. Its very similar in themes and content to that presented more than a decade later in Cabin in the Woods, which Whedon produced. You weren't meant to take this literally. Its a post-modernist critique of the Hollywood blockbuster and the increasingly serialised and soulless nature of big budget franchises with their endless remakes and sequels. It proved to be extremely prescient. The "far future" of the Alien universe is predicted to be bleak, commoditised, soulless, generic and increasingly silly. The film opens with a xenomorph mouth that turns out just to be a fly swatted on a windscreen, showing us how commodification has essentially robbed Alien of its gravitas, uniqueness or ability to evoke fear - turning it into something mundane and beneath notice. The plot involves corporate hacks and mercenaries literally scraping the bottom of the barrel for any last dregs of the Alien that can be exploited for money. Ripley 8 looks on a series of failed abominations resulting from desperate attempts to resurrect the once legitimate Alien films, realising that she herself is just the next cash cow. And at the end, yes, you were meant to find the Newborn pathetic. That's the whole point. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/27/24 Full Review Graham S I remembered this being so much worse than it was… still not amazing but an interesting addition. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/15/24 Full Review NiB Y A worse version of Aliens. Hey at least there's a happy ending, kind of. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/10/24 Full Review C A I don't understand all the hate on this one. It's fun, campy and aliens. What more can you expect. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/04/24 Full Review Pedro Antonio O Esse é um pouco melhor que o primeiro mas mesmo assim tem coisas chatas para caramba Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/03/24 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Peter Travers Rolling Stone Alien Resurrection is juiced by the fresh thinking of visionary French director Jean-Pierre Jeunet... May 14, 2019 Full Review David Ansen Newsweek The franchise has lost none of its taste for acid-spewing, flesh-impaling, entrail-dripping gore. But the tone has changed...If this is your cup of slime, this jauntily gruesome installment won't disappoint. Mar 5, 2018 Full Review Mike Clark USA Today With the great Darius Khondji (Seven, Evita) photographing, Resurrection looks stylishly decayed, but it echoes Alien3 by failing to realize how much the first two series entries benefited from character-driven stories. Rated: 2.5/4 Jan 9, 2018 Full Review Don Shanahan Cinephile Hissy Fit Podcast The subversiveness adds to ballsy flair that keeps this one fun. Mar 23, 2024 Full Review Brian Rowe InSession Film Alien: Resurrection has its moments of weirdness and creativity, but it’s mostly just a throwaway film that didn’t need to be made. May 3, 2023 Full Review Dan DiNicola The Daily Gazette (Schenectady, NY) Not as accomplished as [Aliens], but a vast improvement over the third entry. More a series of horrific rides than a work with emotional resonance. Rated: B Jan 10, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews
